Latest on Carlyle Group Hawaii Telco Purchase
Let's hope they unload it BEFORE the next ELECTION! We don't need them hacking the vote in Blue HI, do we?

4. Activist groups here are very concerned and tried to fight it
In October(?) there was a hearing held, which was not well-publicized. So many people that would have, didn't have a chance to testify against the acquisition.

Someone (ACLU?) came to talk to us about it at a showing of "Carlyle Exposed!" (link below). I remember these comments:

1) Carlyle had a history of raiding the assets of it's acquisitions (the lucrative pension fund could be at risk?)

2) We really don't want a company like Carlyle (heavy Bushco ties) owning the telco lines that will be transmitting the votes to the mainland.

UH Political Film Series

Wednesday, March 2 at 7:00 PM
St. John auditorium, UH Manoa
At the corner of Maile Way and East-West Rd.

"The Corporation"

SYNOPSIS
THE CORPORATION explores the nature and spectacular
rise of the dominant institution of our time. Footage
from pop culture, advertising, TV news, and corporate
propaganda, illuminates the corporation's grip on our
lives. Taking its legal status as a "person" to its
logical conclusion, the film puts the corporation on
the psychiatrist's couch to ask "What kind of person
is it?" Provoking, witty, sweepingly informative, The
Corporation includes forty interviews with corporate
insiders and critics - including Milton Friedman, Noam
Chomsky, Naomi Klein, and Michael Moore - plus true
confessions, case studies and strategies for change.

Winner of 24 INTERNATIONAL AWARDS, 10 of them AUDIENCE
CHOICE AWARDS including the AUDIENCE AWARD for
DOCUMENTARY in WORLD CINEMA at the 2004 SUNDANCE FILM
FESTIVAL.Ê

The film is based on the book The Corporation: The
Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power by Joel
Bakan.

I think this movie is a "must-see" since so much of our present problems (including campaign finance corruption) stem from "corporate overgrowth". I would rank this among the top five progressive documentaries.

2. Thanks to some really dedicated people SafeVoteHawaii looks good to go.
Jason Forrester for one- wow are we lucky to have a brainiac like that who gave a jillion hours to make sure that nightmare does not come to pass. We will have a paper trail!

For updates:

to check current status of the bill:

Yesterday the house finance committee passed the campaign finance reform bill too, though we are not pau on that one either. http://www.cleanelectionshawaii.org/ It was a very ugly meeting. The only person who has voted against it so far, Mark Moses (R- Bonehead) takes deep offence at the suggestion that money may have a less than positive influence on politics. "I am deeply insulted!" Perish the thought!

Anyway we are doing what we can for these two critical issues.

Thanks for caring!

(Oh Carlyle still stinks)

Always fun to cruise around the capitol. I think we have the most beautiful capitol building of all the 50 states.

Hey if you don't mind it would be awesome if you could call your representative and senator and ask them to please pass HB 1713 and SB 1689 (clean elections) and SB 1325 (safe vote, paper trail bill).

Pleeease?

You can find their phone numbers on this hand little chart dealy: http://www.cleanelectionshawaii.org/action/testimony_home.html

7. Yes, they are a very dedicated group, and same for you mahina
We, in Hawaii, are very lucky to have people like you and them fighting for us.

Most of my time is taken up on the national level, but I do what I can - when I can.

I will be compiling and emailing the following info to Jason (per his request earlier in Feb.). Hopefully, it is still useful, it did come in a little late, but it is very compelling. (He already had the Mythbreakers info since he told me they gave it to everyone on the election commission.)
