Need Expert Facts to Refute Conny McCormack on DREs in CA
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 10:45 PM by Ojai Person
I have been listening to and transcribing this interview by Larry Mantle from 2/7/05:
http://216.239.63.104/search?q=cache:U_-iWPLHnd0J:www.scpr.org/programs/airtalk/index.shtml+romero+%2B%22conny+mccormack%22&hl=en&client=firefox-a

He sounds like a rw tool (calls people who call in asking if Shelley is in trouble because he decertified Diebold "the far left"). He's interviewing Conny, Romero, and Jones, a Republican, who was CA SoS for two terms.

Conny definitely has an agenda. Even if she isn't appointed, which Nunez may be pressing for, they are positioning her as advisor to whomever gets the job. Here is her "advice":

What specifically should be top of the list to fix Secretary of State mess?

I believe and I think most of the other counties believe that we need to take a hard look at who has been serving on the secretary’s voting systems procedures panel; it has not been a balanced group and we would like to see that group be replaced with individuals who look at all sides of the issue and who use the number one criteria of whether or not your voting system counts accurately. That should be the top criteria and it hasn’t been. We want to see that restored because the public should expect and they do expect that votes should be counted accurately. Counties have been delivering that for years and we want to make sure that we can continue doing that.

What has been the priority of that committee to this point and what interests are represented there?

Well the priority has been very much to undermine the modern electronic voting equpiment that the HAVA and the federal govt has been encouraging the states to buy and to install and there are some legal requirements that can only be met now by that electronic voting equipment. So we need to remove this misplaced and completely illogical belief that there’s a problem with that equipment because there isn’t and there’s absolutely no evidence that there has been and there’s been an undermining of that public confidence. We need to restore the public confidence and show that the accuracy of the testing, which is very rigorous should come first to make sure that the equipment’s accurate. And we’ve had no problems with the accuracy of the equipment.

sorry this is hurriedly done...got to go out the door.

1. Sounds like she got a retainer as well! Argh!
I'll be out tonight, too, Ojai Person. But, be back in the a.m.

We need a campaign of our own to counter her.

Thanks for the transcribing,
Beth

2. Printers will cost 23 million
February 7, 2005

Adding E-Voting Printers Could Cost $23 Million, Counties Say

Some jurisdictions have paper-trail capability included in their costs already. Others will have to find the money, but may be reimbursed.

By Stuart Pfeifer, Times Staff Writer

Local election officials in California say they may have to pay between $18 million and $23 million to comply with a state law requiring printed records of ballots cast on electronic voting machines.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, addressing concerns about the reliability of touch-screen voting machines, signed a law last year that required installation of the printers by Jan. 1, 2006.

Even if state or federal funds eventually cover the cost of the printers, counties may have to pick up the tab initially, officials say.

Five of the 13 counties with electronic voting systems say their suppliers will make the changes at no additional cost because the printers were part of their original contracts. But other counties are wondering where they'll find the money. Orange County estimates it will cost $9 million to make the changes. Riverside County estimates its cost at between $3.4 million and $4.7 million, and Alameda County may have to pay between $5 million and $8 million.
