Save Shelley and voting in CA: Important action alert.
His resignation does not take effect until March 1st.

http://patrickhenrythinktank.org/

Call Kevin Shelley 916-653-7244 Urge Him to Rescind his Resignation
(See also below.)

PUT YOUR DONATIONS TOWARDS CAUSES AND LEADERS THAT SUPPORT YOU - NOT TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON SOCIALIZING.
...

Here are the current causes/leaders that need your donations:

KEVIN SHELLEY: He has expended a great deal of his personal funds so that he can continue to fight for fair elections. If we lose him, we could lose California. If you want to help donate to Kevin Shelley's legal defense fund, you can send donations to his aacountants at:

Olson, Hagel & Fishburn
555 Capitol Mall, Suite 1425
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 442-2952

Make checks out to Legal Defense Fund.

JIM MCDERMOTT: Fighting for your right to know the truth has cost Jim over half a million dollars, and this amount is climbing. This is the man who went to Baghdad to try to stop this war that was based on a lie. He needs your support. Please consider donating at http://mcdermottforcongress.com/contribute.html.

There is also a link from the front page to a resolution that was passed in support of Kevin Shelley. The resolution shows the partisan attacks on him for exactly what they are.

1. posted from another thread on same topic...
This is all about duhhh-gov'r-nator's Referendum. There's no way it would've passed with Shelley in place. What duhhh-gov'r-nator's going to do is fake the petition signatures, hack the vote when it gets here, then declare his "beta test" of bush's SS plan will happen by man-date 'on' the people of California.

Mind you those hand full of people after Calpers, (they want to privatize it if you didn't know), aren't fully aware of what they're up against. They're believing their own hype and drinking their own Kool-aid. For those in the dark on the nefarious plans of the neoCons in regards to the Cali situation here's a link http://tinyurl.com/48orm. You've got to have a NY times account to read this excerpt. The accounts are free.

6. Art Torres needs to stand behind Shelley or let someone else lead party.
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 02:51 PM by genius
Shelley is a close friend of Miehael Powells and he refused to allow a resolution against proposed FCC changes go through before it was too late. Torres also backed Prop 69, providing for DNC removal from anyone who is arrested - even if they are never charged. He opposed 66, calling for three strikes reform. Currently a mother can get life for stealing a loaf of bread to feed her starving child. The CDP managed to reverse Torres's attempts to get the party to take the wrong positions on 66 and 69 but they had to get a super majority to reverse Torres's positions. Right now, Torres wants to help Bustamonte's son get the job in 06 so he's hoping Arnold will appoint a Thug everyone hatss.

7. Bush Oil Cartel: the Texification, Bushification and Dieboldization of...
...the Golden State.

This is IT, DUers! This is where we will win or lose the election reform struggle. Not in Congress (quite hopeless!). In the states! Right now. In CA. BushCons a thousand steps ahead of us.

Look for my post tomorrow, DU LETTER OF THE WEEK #4, aimed at CA legislators, to stop Schwarzenegger from appointing a BushCon or a pro-Diebold Democrat as SoS, and to preserve Shelley's reforms (decertification of Diebold, paper ballot option). VERY, VERY, VERY URGENT!

It looks like Shelley wasn't up to the fight--and stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid Democrats abandoned him. I am just appalled at what the BushCons have done here, and Democrats don't realize that they are NEXT.

8. SF Chron: "Shelley Quits" analysis by the witch hunters

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/02/05/MNG0TB6KQR1.DTL

Sacramento -- Shortly after becoming secretary of state, Kevin Shelley gathered together several county elections chiefs for a get-to-know-you meeting in which he informed them: "There's a new sheriff in town.''

Replacing the genial Bill Jones, a longtime lawmaker who had been in office the previous eight years, Shelley immediately alienated many of the people he needed to work with as the state's top elections official.

In politics, where personal relationships often mean the difference between success and failure, Shelley never had the patience to develop them.

Then, facing an extraordinary swirl of investigations and allegations, Shelley found himself with few allies to help him fight. . . .

16. Don't LET IT GO. STAY ON IT UNTIL MARCH 1ST
This is yet another line in the sand, folks.

We MUST do two things: Let Shelley know we support him AND WANT HIM TO STAY, and let the media and the party know WE WANT SHELLEY TO STAY.

1. We have to make calls every day, to Shelley, to Torres, to the CA Dem Leadership.

2. We have to look for opportunities to write to the Sacto Bee, the SF Chron and the L.A. Times.

3. We have to ring up our networks and ask them to do the same.

No matter Shelley's announcement, IT'S OUR VOTE at stake.

If the man is guilty, LET THEM PROVE IT. Notice, he's being smeared with all the usual smears: allegations of instability, of mishandling money, of disloyalty. Sound familiar?

Don't give in. Make noise. SQUEAK!

17. Letter in response to "Shelley Quits" in the SF Chron
Editor,

Voting rights adocates all over the country have been phoning, emailing and donating their support to Kevin Shelley for some time now. It's surprising the Chronicle seems unaware of this.

The attacks on Kevin Shelley are the same attacks made on anyone who obstructs the GOP these days: allegations of instability, improper handling of campaign funds, and disloyalty. The real lesson of the Shelley witchhunt is: do not decertify Diebold.

It's been nice voting in California.

18. We should most definitely be sending money to that legal fund!
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 04:53 AM by Ojai Person
He will need it and it is abysmal what is being done to him. We need to send a message loud and clear that the people will support those with real integrity.

Edited to add, but we must also understand that he may need to withdraw from this fight right now. We must be prepared to continue it and let him and the world know that he did the right thing and is a good man, no matter what petty things they accuse him of.

19. Do or Die(bold) time: If California falls, we lose big time
SAVE CALIFORNIA, ITS THE NEW BATTLEGROUND STATE

FIRST: They went after Gray Davis and took over the governorship with
Arnold.
SECOND: They went after Kevin Shelley and have forced him to resign.
THIRD: They will install an RNC thug as Secretary of State and will
control California's voting system
FOURTH: They will mandate e-voting without paper (the bill is ready, the
campaign begun)
FIFTH: California will become a red state

GAME OVER. If we don't save California's electoral system from
take-over, the battle for our votes will be irreparably set back.

We are setting up the web site http://www.banthemachine.com to be used in the fight to save California from takeover of its election system. This fight is of national importance and it is vital we keep California free.

Join us in our efforts.
