A statistics problem I need help with - Iraqi "Election"
I am not good with numbers, so I was hoping someone could help.

Number of registered voters = ?
Percentage of registered who voted = 57%
Number of registered exiles = 280,000
Number of exile voters = 265,000

With these numbers, is it possible to figure out how many Iraqi's were registered inside Iraq, and how many actually voted? I am assuming that the exiles is a subset of the total registered vote. Of course, all this assumes that the numbers I am using are even accurate. I got them off of Michael Moore's site.

1. If you knew either the number of registered in Iraq or
the number who voted in Iraq, then yes. Otherwise no.

2. You need one more number, I think
It's algebra. (Don't be afraid -- algebra is your friend.)

(voters abroad + voters inside) = 0.57*(registered abroad +registered inside)

You need one of the numbers for those inside Iraq to solve for the remaining number.

3. Do you think it's safe to assume that everyone who voted was registered?

4. According to NPR news report the day after the election...
...8,000,000 of the 14,000,000 eligable voters took part in the election in Iraq. So if we assume that the Iraqis overseas including those in the U.S. were part of those numbers than the figures should look like this:

Iraqi Election Summary
January 30, 2005

Regsitered
Country Voters Voted Percent

Iraq 13720000 7735000 56.4%
U.S. 280000 265000 94.6%
Total 14000000 8000000 57.1%

5. Post has 18 million eligible voters
According to the Washington Post, there are 18 million eligible voters compared to 14 million registred voters. See http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/nation/columns/kurtzhoward/ If the 18 million number is correct, then the true turnout is much lower than reported.

7. Well if that's the case the voting base drops from 57.1% to 44.4%
...however, Iraqi demographics show that voting age adults are as follows:

Iraq Popoulation 2004

Total, all ages 25,374,691

0 to 4 3,811,365
5 to 9 3,408,870
10 to 14 3,017,904
15 to 17 1,800,000(est)
18 to 19 1,117,213(est)
subtotal (0-19) 13,155,352

voting age (18+) 13,336,552
