I watched 5 minutes of the coronation
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 10:03 AM by proud2Blib
I admit I hadn't planned on watching any of it. But I tape a soap opera every day and watch it in the morning while I am getting ready for work. So I turned it on this morning, and it had been pre-empted by the coronation. I started to turn it off but my curiosity got the better of me.

It was CBS. Some ditzy blonde reporter was reporting to Dan Rather from the street while the parade was going by. First thing I heard her say was the crowd was subdued and there were very few protesters. Well, while she is saying this, the camera panned in on a huge - like 10 foot long - anti bush sign that a group of protesters was holding up. I forget what it said, it was yellow with black letters. And in every camera shot I saw during my 5 minute viewing, I saw black and white signs held up that said WORST PRESIDENT EVER. There were literally dozens. :)

Then the reporter said well here comes *'s limo and the camera, still panning the crowd, catches a huge group of people on the sidewalk who turned around as the limo passed by. By this point I am yelling 'turn your back on bush!'

Then Dan Rather asks the reporter if the crowd is chanting or clapping as * passes by and she says 'well, not really Dan, like I said they are pretty subdued'. And in the background, I hear a big group of people shouting FUCK BUSH!! And of course, I had to join in:)

So to all the DUers who braved the cold to be there yesterday, you rock!!! I saw you guys and so did any other non-braindead viewer. In spite of what the media tried to tell us, I heard your protests and I saw your signs. And remember, I only watched for 5 minutes.

2. I want the new chant to be:
WE'RE NOT BRAIN DEAD

It is a message not only for our govt, but our media too.

3. It's the press corpse that's subdued, not the protestors
What a bunch of rollovers. Sit. Stay. Speak. Lie down. Roll over. Play dead.

Useless hyenas. And now all the papers will publish their statements, "So-and-so reported blah blah blah," and it will become fact in people's minds because they don't trust their lying eyes or ears.

Grrrrr. This is precisely why I stopped watching television 10 years ago. It sucks.

5. Maybe the news tide is turning?
This is my first post after months of lurking.
I already know that I'm an irredeemable Pollyanna, and that the glasses I wear are rosy in color -- I've been told these things many times, and will undoubtedly hear them many more times in the future.
But hey... it works for me! :7

Given that, here is my optimistic take on the news coverage yesterday:

I watched the coronation, then *'s speech. I saw and heard more negative looks, expressions, and speech than positive ones, even from the * side.

Later on, I turned on CNN to see what kind of coverage (if any) may have been given to the protesters. I fully expected to see fawning coverage and commentary of *, or at least of the coronation event itself. Lou Dobbs was still in "pro-* mode", but he had Q & A sessions with other reporters on different topics. THOSE reporters surprised me (and I think they surprised Lou, too).

He asked Judy Woodruff what the defining issue of *'s second term would be. She said (I'm paraphrasing here) that "barring any new developments or issues, the Iraq situation will be far and away the 'make it or break it' issue for this term'. She was rather emphatic on that "barring anything new" qualifier. She went on to discuss the problems with Iraq, touching on the lack of WMDs, the credibility problem resulting from that, and the overall horrible way it's going over there so far. In wrapping up, she said something like (and again, I'm paraphrasing.. these are NOT direct quotes)-- "But that's IF no new issues develop... and we don't know what might come up".
She was again rather emphatic when saying this.
It left me with the impression that she was foreshadowing some "new development" that would eclipse even the war in Iraq as the major issue of this administration's second term. Hmmm.

Then, Lou cut to other reporters in succession, asking each about varied topics. Every time, or so at least it seemed to me, the reporters answering his questions had negative spins on their respective topics, from *'s lack of support for the Social Security plan even among his own party members in Congress, to serious criticism of the speech he gave. There seemed to be a genuine feeling of alarm about the speech and what he had said in it.

Unfortunately, I could only watch for 15 minutes or so, as I then got into a very long phone conversation with my father, and we had ourselves a 2-hour *-bashing fest. I was still watching CNN, but now with the sound off, so I don't know what kind of commentary came along with the footage I saw, but there seemed to be a good bit of footage of the protesters. That surprised me, too, that they made it onto CNN at all.

Overall, I came away from the news yesterday evening with the distinct impression that perhaps the media (or at least CNN), had removed the kid gloves they've been wearing for quite some time.
It was so sudden, I wondered if perhaps whatever "deal" had been struck with the White House regarding election fraud coverage had expired with the coronation, or if maybe the press was finally waking up and smelling the coffee. Whatever the reason, it did seem to me that the tide is shifting. Of course, all that is based on about 15 minutes on MSM news viewing, so I'll have to wait and see what happens from here on out.

But it sure did my little Pollyanna heart good to see less than glowing coverage of * for a change, and on the day of his coronation to boot. :)

6. Welcome to the world of DU posters, (ummm) Moosepoop! (Nice user name.)

I was pleasantly surprised myself at the MSM exposure of the protestors, and even more surprised at most of the pundits' "take" on **'s inauguration speech.

Chris Matthews (MSNBC's Hardball) kept saying that it sounded like ** was more or less saying "It's my way or the highway" to every nation out there, be it a tyranny or a monarchy. He asked his panelists several times "How do you think foreign leaders are going to take this speech?"

Maybe they are starting to wake up! (One can dream, eh?)

Edited for spelling... typing too fast again!

9. Another DU welcome to
you, Moosepoop! I liked your post and agree with all on this thread. I finally heard some negatives about this admin, and all was not glowing. Indeed, this would be a wonderful trend if they keep it going. Gawd knows they's enough out there so they'd never run out of informative and inflammatory material.
Also, it was great to see all the protesters, and I feel like they all represented me, and those of us who couldn't make it to DC.

8. The giant yellow and black signs
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 02:00 PM by Der Blaue Engel
said IMPEACH BUSH from impeachbush.org. :D

They were huge and wonderful...every time the camera was on the crowds, you could see one, no matter what stupid babble was happening from the commentator. The rest of the world will know that we do not accept this ass as our leader.

I didn't realize that posts to hold up signs were forbidden this year (what; did they think someone might stake the bloodsucker?). I kept wondering why people were holding up signs without posts. After I read about the post ban in an article on the security last night, I realized how many people I had seen holding up large, heavy, unwieldy signs for long periods of time with their arms over their heads. That isn't easy, and it's uncomfortable.

The Bush admin thought they could suppress the truth being shown on large signs by using a security technicality. They were wrong. The protesters definitely ROCKED!

:yourock: :yourock: :yourock: :yourock: :yourock:

on edit: I guess I need a "you rock" smiley holding the sign over its head with both hands! :D

12. This might be a security measure everywhere
We couldn't have sticks for signs at the statehouse in Columbus, OH at the December 8th rally. Truthfully, it doesn't bother me too much. They CAN be used as weapons in a pinch but we're not there to instigate violence. And if things do get ugly, there's that much less of a chance of putting another demonstrator's eye out.

That being said, I was amazed by the number of protestors in Washington. And it seemed to me that no matter what kind of spin the MSM put on it, the images gave it away. I'd say the majority of the camera viewed showed some form of dissent or another.
