Met with my Congressman today and here is one of the things he said:
One of the ideas I took away from the meeting concerned what WE can do to help.
One of the biggest concerns right now is the Supreme Court Justice situation.
He suggested that the people need to write letters to the Justices and urge them to stay on the bench for the next four years.
They need to understand that it is dangerous to the well being of the democracy if the court leans as far right as the rest of the government.
I have been looking for address's to the Justices, so if anyone knows where to mail letters insert it here.

1. you have to send paper letters, by the way
The Supreme Court does not accept any emails or phone calls or faxes. Has to be paper.

20. I actually suspect one of those five has had serious regrets,
Why didn't Sandra Day O'Connor retire as she so desperately wanted to?

Mad King George must be too mad even for her.

:scared:

Please refrain from dying until 2009. To be safe, make that 2017. I know that you've already had cancer and will be 90-100, but we're the Red Sox of politics!

5. Asking to much......
Stevens stayed to give us another chance....geez, he's 84...he did his patriotic duty he should be able to retire and smell some roses before he leaves us.......I dont think O'Connor and Ginsberg will leave unless its a health issue.

This is just one of the things that I took away from the meeting. There are other things going one as well.
Open for suggestions from such I fine mind as yours.

11. Sorry, maybe it is a start.
I'm just so depressed right now and I don't think spending time
begging judges to stay will really do us much good. It seems we
can spend our energies in more effective ways, so many of which
have been discussed on our board but perhaps your congressman
is very right. Sorry, didn't mean to sound snippy. Over the past
six years I've written, called, donated money I didn't have,
protested the war, taken much needed time from my family to fight
for the cause and I think I'm just too sick at heart right now to
think straight. You're so right, I do not have a fine mind right
now. I think it's great you talked to your congressman and gave us
your input - everything is important and my attitude was
inappropriate so I am sorry.

They won't be able to stop Bush*'s Supreme Court nominations at all.

No more filibusters.
No more anything by Democrats in DC.

If not, it's all over.

12. Which ones could leave and what are their party affiliations?
O'Connor, for one, wants to retire but needed Bush to win so she could.

19. Reinquist is to far too ill to receive letters
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 05:57 AM by Rhiannon12866
I know, for sure, that he'll be stepping down soon, if he is this ill, and Bush*, if in office, will appoint his replacement. O'Connor only wants to retire if a Republican president is in office, to appoint her replacement. And poor Stevens, our liberal, will probably die on the bench. There's something really wrong here.;(

We knew it was bad in 2000, when Bush* was appointed by the Supreme Court, and not the American people, hence the asterisk. But it's worse than we thought. It wasn't just an ideological vote. Scalia and Thomas, who Bush* has said were his favorite justices, both had something personal to gain. Scalia's two sons were both attorneys for the Bush* campaign and one of them was appointed the attorney for the Dept. Of Labor when Bush* assumed office. Not too shabby. And Clarence Thomas's wife was in charge of evaluating resumes for the Bush* team. Suddenly, her star rose. There is lots more that I learned in "Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election," which I watched the other night. This election is certainly worse and I hope that more than a filmed documentary, in years to come, exposes it...:grr:

On edit: here's the info on "Unprecedented," in case anybody else has missed this must-see film. It's only about an hour long...

I watched an hour-long version on Sundance, last week. I subscribe to ICH, but don't always get the chance to read or watch everything. ICH has long been a particular favorite of mine, so I thank you.:-)

14. Thank you doing this.
However this goes forward, we will need people like you that have us do things in a rational way, even though some us might be pursuing the radical alternatives.

Everyone that can fight in whatever capacity will be needed.
When one method doesn't work, we will use another. We should all be very fearful of what this does to the Supreme Court. That is as permanent as it gets and after all, they're the ones that got us into this mess in 2000.

15. Weren't there any better ideas from your Congressman?
I mean, we have no control over when they retire from the Bench. Did he/she have any input on the fact that the election was stolen? Did they even address that? Or that the Dems have no "brand" or that they are letting this insanity of war move forward?

No offense to you, but it's not very helpful for him/her to say write and beg the justices to stay on because we think that the politics are too far to the right right now.

I'm not complaining about you.. at least you met with this person, but jeesh.... it's not much to work with...

Thanks.

18. READ BETWEEN THE LINES
It says they won't be able to stop Bush* from nominating all Fundies.

If she thought they could still filibuster them she would have been
talking up how they were going to fight the good fight and all.
She didn't say that. Did she?

24. Weeks & MONTHS?
You think the media will actually report about it by then? Nobody besides us "in the know" people seem to give a damn. The people in the press that really know how it went down are being silenced apparently.
