My letter to Plain Dealer re: Tubbs and Jackson to please let it go
Well, I just finished composing this to the fine, fine editors at the Plain Dealer. It took me all afternoon - hope you enjoy it.

We have not yet begun to fight - so get over it

While reading your editorial admonishing Rep. Stephanie Tubbs and Rev. Jesse Jackson to “please let it go” I was reminded of the now infamous words of Vice-President Cheney to Vermont Senator Leahy questionining him about his ties to Hallliburton.

“Go f--k yourself.”

You might as well have just told Tubbs and Jackson to shut up and go to the back of the bus.

To the media who keep telling those of us who believe the 2004 election was a criminal sham to just forget about it: you just don’t get it, do you?

What is it about our issues with this election that make you so uncomfortable? Is it that as a country we have to admit to ourselves that there is a cultural divide that allows a fair vote only for white people with above poverty level incomes? You seem to forget that the machines that malfunctioned and high number of provisional ballots happened most frequently in the precincts that had minority voters. That this problem only seems to be getting worse since the debacle of Florida in 2000, should be sending a rally cry to all American citizens that something is amiss with the way we hold elections in this country.

You say the bipartisan Board of Elections of Ohio has spoken, so be it, but you fail to address the other issues at hand.

Are you embarassed because you, the media, have failed to fully examine the egregious conflict of interest involving the two companies counting 80% of this country’s votes with one of those company’s CEOs pledging support to reelect Bush?

Do you simply not understand the numbers involved in the discrepency between the exit polls and posted results? Can you explain why these exit polls are good enough to spot fraud in other countries but not our own?

Or have you simply forgotten history? Well, allow me to retell it.

Once upon a time there was an election. Votes were being cast but thrown out due to problems with the ballots.

“Something’s not right!” cried the people.

They requested a hand count to fairly determine the winner.

But the Secretary of State who ran the election and also worked for the victor-apparent would not let them recount ALL the votes.

“You’re being partisan!” they screamed.

But their voices were drowned out by a panel of nine who ruled in favor of the victor-apparent thus crowning the idiot who would be king.

But the peasants still squawked “No fair! No fair!”

So they went to a panel of one hundred and asked “Will you stand up for us?” only to be met by silence.

There was much grumbling throughout the kingdom to which the town criers spat, “It’s over! Just get on with your lives!”

And so the peasants moved on vowing that that they would never ever let it happen again. But on nights when all the punditry has died down and all is quiet, you can hear a creature called consortiumnews.com whispering “Gore won. Gore won.”

Here we are again, four years later with a Secretary of State working for the victor-apparent’s campaign and the people of that state crying no fair, no fair!

So. Never. Ever. Again. Got it?

We are not going away this time.

As for me, a pissed off little white girl living in Columbus, I refuse to be complicit in what I see as an erosion of my right to fair representation within my government. My ancestors came to this country before the American Revolution and I will not shrug off my obligation to uphold the values written in the Constitution. I was born with the responsibility of this legacy and I will die to defend it as have so many others before me.

I’m sorry the editors at the Plain Dealer find our unified voice of dissent inconvenient. It’s a sad state of affairs when the media we’ve come to rely on to protect the interests of the people won’t risk the time or the ink in an effort to find the truth. Quite frankly, I don’t know how you can sleep at night.
