Roll Call! How many Senators' offices have you called today?
Senate switchboard: 800-839-5276

List of Senators by Party:
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm?OrderBy=party&Sort=ASC

Ask for a Senator, any Senator. Urge them to stand with Conyers on Thursday.

Ask them if you can fax this document:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=221594&mesg_id=221594&page=

If they ask if you're a constituent of the respective State, tell them that Senators work for their country, not their state.

This will make a difference. About half of the offices I have called today have commented on the fact that they have received many calls on the subject today alone. Help make this every Senator's priority for the week.

If you haven't called a Senator, pick up the phone.

6. Thank you for informing us that they work for 'country, not just state'...
as I actually received what appeared to be a form letter response last week from one of the Senator's offices...informing me that he could NOT respond to my issue raised as I was NOT a constitutent?!!

Maybe later I'll remember which Senator it was, so we could shower him with emails. I just remember feeling it was a rude response for a public servant (but maybe some have forgotten that...since for the last few elections they've not actually been elected by TRUE popular vote).

9. I called Senator Carl Levin today.....
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 02:09 PM by utopiansecretagent
at his DC office. The secretary acknowledged Conyers letter. She was kind of a bitch, brushed me off, said thank you, i'll pass the message on and hung up, without even asking me my name or address.

on edit: I also emailed last week.

17. Call Debbie Stabenow also...
Her DC office just told me they hadn't gotten very many calls, though they are not sure of the number of emails.

(202) 224-4822

Called Carl this morning, asked what the criteria would be for his contest, i.e. definitive proof of fraud, etc. His aide said that Carl had not made a statement one way or the other. I said that since time was of the essence, they should probably have some prepared message on the matter to contituents. He didn't agree or disagree.

Hmph.

12. Phone calls are more effective....

Which would you more likely respond to? An impersonal e-mail, or an unrehearsed person-person phone call? Yes, you'll just be talking toa staff member, but voice transmits much more than word alone.

I need to scrub my brain out now. Every communication is to inform me that HIS facts are correct and he loves to hear from me.. He doesn't comment on the ones that ask how he is a Christian but votes in the senate against the poor, among other things....
Specter is in the republicans for choice or something, and I remember one of their spokeWOMEN coming on tv to say that they'll take the people who highjacked their party down(whether they're in office or not).
But Santorum.. anyone want to call him?

25. last time I contacted Santorum's office I was subtley threatened
I had the misfortune of dealing with a couple of kids dealing with my issue. The first hung up and after calling back and really letting the other have it was told sarcastically that he was glad he had my info ( name, ect.) and he would make sure things would be taken care of. Through words you don't get the direct threat he was throwing out. I called the Washington office to lodge a complaint and no one ever returned my phone calls on the issue.

Santorum is one of the most vile of the vile. With the distance schooling of his children scandal I hope we have a decent candidate to take the bastard out!

29. 27 out of about 100
I just printed off a list of senators and started checking them off. Got polite office people on the phone, and gave them my brief pointed message. If they pointed out I wasn't a constituent (What part of Tennessee are you from?) I pointed out that all senators represented all Americans, not just the voters in their state. One Rep. office said she would add my name to the list. Everybody was nice and polite, and the switchboard operators sounded exhausted at the end of the day.

I'm going to skip Frist and Bunning--otherwise, every senator gets a call. This is actually fun. Especially on their dime.

39. Left a message for Chafee
The key thing is to say, we cannot have elections that may allow rogue elements of a party to use illegal methods to give an advantage to thier candidate.

We have to appeal to moderates and show them that they aren't going to win thier primaries if the cons can use fraud to defeat them.

41. Called Bayh's office - they seem very stressed out and a little bitchy.
They kept putting me on hold - then they must have taken me off hold by mistake because I could hear them complaining about the last caller until they realized I could hear them .... "he said well I really think you should.... oh wait .... hello?" Ha ha!! ;-)

Also called Lugars office - they seemed oh so calm and nice. I sometimes think Lugar would challenge the election before Bayh would.

45. Did my own letter
personalizing it, but sent it by fax or e-mail to all dems and Jeffords and calling those I couldn't get a fax or direct e-mail address for (including Sen. Obama and Salazar).

I will lose faith in the Democratic Party and maybe even leave it if they do not show backbone. And I've been a strong supporter for more than 10 years.

The text of my letter:
========================================================
Dear Senator:

Please do not certify the electors tomorrow!

My two sons (my only children) are going to be fighting in Iraq this year to ensure free and fair elections and yet here in the United States, so many egregious irregularities took place that our presidential election was neither free nor fair.

I have spent many hours watching CSpan and Congr. Conyers hearings. If you value the democratic process, you MUST spend the time to familiarize yourself with the issues he has explored.

Please, I beg you, for my son’s sakes, and because it is your duty: Do not certify the electors tomorrow and insist on investigation into the 2004 Presidential election. We cannot call ourselves free when elections are not fair. I am sending this fax to every single Democratic Senator because you as a party need to exercise commitment to democracy.

Very truly yours,

52. Wow, there are alot of pretty girls on this forum!
I would like to suggest people use a regular fax as well as the Efax solution, it makes more of a statement and can´t be filtered as easily.

I am sending faxes with a big Norwegian flag on it.

56. I just called Schumer and Clinton
It took forever to get through to either office, which was encouraging testimony about the volume of calls they must be getting. The person at Schumer's office said that they were getting "Oh soooooooooo many calls about this!" When I asked if Sen Clinton had made a decision about whether she would stand tomorrow the person said that she was "undecided". They also mentioned that Clinton had been very "tuned into" this issue from the beginning and had had her chief counsel attend the Conyers hearings. I know she said recently in a radio interview that she hadn't heard much about it, but apparently that isn't true. I seriously doubt that either of my Senators will stand, but I can dream, can't I?

58. Sent e-mail to Bill Nelson
Subject: Please reconsider Rep. Conyers request

Please Senator Nelson, as the minority party in the Congress, it behooves us to stand for what we feel is the right thing, even if it's the most difficult thing to do.

Voting Irregularites, no matter if it's suppression or actual criminal activity, can not be tolerated. If we lose the franchise, we are no different than other countries fighting for a Democratic system of government.

This is the United States of America. If we believe we are the greatest country in the world, exporting democracy around the globe, we should start at home.

Please, please reconsider standing with your fellow Democrats to make a stand against partisan, corporate-owned, paperless voting machines.

Thank you for your time.

He said ro call Dennis Hastert at 1-202-225-0600 AND Bill Frist at 1-202-224-3135!!

The call is to make a formal request for Election Reform. I've been dialing and dialing and can't get through.... guess they've either decided NOT to answer OR they're getting bombarded!

67. as of now, nearly all of them
I set out to call all 100, and have made good progress. I left a message with a person in all but two cases, when I had to leave it on a machine. I have a list of 5 left, whose offices I haven't talked to yet: Boxer, harkin, Isaacson, and Schumer--their phone lines have been busy on three tries today. So I've talked to approximately 95 offices, I guess.

If it weren't for this group and posts like yours, I might not have called around, but today I phoned Boxer, Levin, Byrd, Clinton, Chafee (R), Dayton, Levin, Biden, Reid, Collins(R) and Snowe (R) and tried Bill Nelson but couldn't get through.

I plagiarized a lot of your post to pass onto my "people." Hope you don't mind - :-)

78. Called almost 90 offices
today and will finish the balance tomorrow. I asked that they take a serious look at the report issued today by the House Judiciary Committee Democratic Staff. Since I have never called any elected official before today the calls went smoothly and most were receptive.

I was silent in 2000, but will not make the same mistake again.

80. KENNEDY STAFFER SAID NO
he told me there was no evidence of voting irregularities in ohio, that the recount was already done and that all the votes had been counted.
i was shocked. i said: "In Ohio?"
yes he tells me. and a protest will not change the election.

so. now i know where kennedy stands.
how disheartening.
for years i've thought it would be a sad day when he leaves the senate.
now i'm having a change of heart.
bye-bye teddy. you don't deserve that job when you don't give a shit about the voting rights of Americans.
legacy? how 'bout not enough of an american to keep democracy alive.
all bluster. all bullshit!

I emailed them all, and I also called the Frist and Hastert, McCain, Boxer, my Florida three (only one Dem, but so be it) and all the moderate republicans. I know they won't stand, but I figured that we should jam their faxes and phone banks anyway, so they know people are pissed and mobilized.
