If the GOP isn't worried about Conyers, why are they attacking him?
http://www.thenews-messenger.com/news/stories/20041228/opinion/1798276.html

(snip)

If Conyers was so concerned about voting problems, where was he in 1998 when election officials in his hometown of Detroit took a disgraceful two weeks to count ballots due to lost poll books and miscounting of precinct totals?

Where was he in 2001 when the counting of absentee ballots in Detroit had to be halted in midstream by state officials after it was discovered that the city clerk was simply ignoring state requirements for the use of software that would eject ballots that couldn't be read by machine?

And where was he when a memo allegedly drafted by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's aides in 2002 claimed that Detroit's voter rolls were overstated by about 150,000 people -- a strong hint that something may be seriously amiss in the Detroit election process, threatening the value of the ballot for people who are genuinely qualified to vote?

Conyers' outrage appears to be highly selective. The target of his investigative demand -- a demand in which he has been joined by Jesse Jackson and others -- is the Ohio secretary of state, Kenneth Blackwell, who is black and Republican. In other words, he is one of those non-conforming minorities who is threatening to bust up the liberal plantation from which Conyers and others earn a handsome living.

The flat fact is that Conyers has done a great deal to make Detroit elections cleaner, and has repeatedly called on the Justice Department, along with other state officials, for assistance when there have been problems like the ones described in the hit piece above.

Someone is getting nervous.

5. Hey that's great news! They're getting worried! Conyers must be on to
something!

IMO, they wouldn't want to call attention to something false, something they know will eventually die down. But, if they are starting to attack and defend, then there must be some truth to the issues.

6. They will attack Conyers in his next primary...
...will attempt to have some other african-american beat him through a combination of smear and election fraud. Wont work in his case, he is too popular and powerful, same for Waters, but they may take down some other members of Congress this way.

With election fraud, the GOP hopes to control all the elected offfices in America.

Riiiiight. Conyers is discriminating against Blackwell because he is black and Republican.

You heard it here folks!

It's black on black crime!! </sarcasm!>

The liberal plantation? What the hell is that exactly? Wouldn't a liberal like Conyers be more inclined to encourage a fellow minority to achieve success in the cutthroat world of politics?

No, he is not condemning Blackwell for being a "Black Republican!"

He is condemning Blackwell for being a dishonest man who is violating and obstructing the law!

19. As do I...
Leave it to the neo-cons to make race an issue at all in this. Why does it always have to be about that? I know they TRY to make it look as if they are so open-minded, (like, hi, focusing the camera all night on the FOUR people of color who were at the RNC) but clearly those writing this article could not see past the color of a person's skin, even though this is not an issue about race at all! It is about Blackwell screwing up, and Conyers calling him on it.

and, marginalizes the whole debate.

Never thought about this before, but this is the upshot of Bush's "minority inclusive" Cabinet. The message is, "there's nothing to see here, move along" and it's a Neocon perversion of the inclusiveness we value.

Maybe not saying this well, & am Latina myself. But, in some way, they thought that by putting credentialled tokens into the Cabinet, they would deflect scrutiny. And, it looks like it's worked.

Special hell for these people, please.

so I looked this up:

http://www.detnews.com/2004/editorial/0412/28/A08-42340.htm

"If Conyers really wants to get to the bottom of problematic balloting, he ought to come back home. Few places in America have as inept an election system as Detroit. "

"Detroit would be fertile ground for congressional investigators.

Conyers should turn his attention homeward..."

Hmmm, It appears the Detroit News "got the memo". Anything to distract from what John Conyers is up to today!

I was waiting to see Al Gore at a campaign rally in Detroit in late October 2000. I saw John Conyers standing nearby and jumped out of line to go introduce myself and thank him for all the good work he had done over the years on behalf of working people and families. He's always been a hero of mine.

36. This is the little note I sent to the Detroit News
It seems to me that if the media was playing the role of government watchdog, Conyers wouldn't need to look into the issue of election fraud.

Instead, printed media has become nothing but a bunch GOP lackeys once again smearing the messenger instead of
investigating what happened in Ohio.

43. And here's the letter I just sent them.
What is wrong with this picture? All the leading news organizations of the U.S.-- ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, Fox News -- own the data. Fine and good. But you state they "have no obligation to share it." And here I always thought that it was the purpose and responsibility of the press to *release* information, not hide it.

What are they all so intent on hiding? Since when is "futility" an excuse for hiding the truth? If it is so futile to examine these polls, why not just release them?

The news organizations' flimsy "excuse" that they haven't finished analyzing the data is purely transparent. The data specifically being requested is the *raw* data, ie. data that has not been analyzed, massaged, and adjusted to fit the official election results.

As Bill Moyers has been trying to point out, the mass media in this country is no longer free, and your editorial is just another example of it.
