want to destroy the republican party? join it.
hang on..... the thought of it makes me sick to my stomach to a certain degree. republicans stimulate my gag reflex.

but ..... what if millions of left-leaning and proper thinking people flooded the republican party, in effect taking it away from the psychos who are running it now.

with enough of a presence, we could get left-leaning candidates elected at the grassroots level, then work up from there. if something tastes bitter, you dilute it enough until the new taste becomes the dominant one.

it's like a high school party at some preppy kid's house. all the jocks and rich kids are standing around with sticks up their asses, when all of a sudden all the regular folks show up. and keep showing up. and keep showing up until all the jocks and rich kids leave because they're having to rub elbows with people they consider beneath them. yet the party becomes ours and we can put something besides kenny g. on the stereo. not to mention, drink all their beer and take liberties with their girlfriends.

we can change their programs. we can change the people they present for office. we can make sure another asshole like george bush never gets far enough up the ladder to be a threat to anyone.

you know how their ultra-conservative wing ran someone against arlen specter in the primary? we could do the same thing in reverse. imagine rick santorum losing the primary to someone who didn't say the most stupid, homophobic thing in the world when he opened his mouth.

we're not going to take them down by protesting. we're not going to do it with violence, as much as many people would like to. we're not going to do it by being democrats as long as they continue to brand us as a party of wild-eyed liberals.

i'm not saying "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." i'm saying if we can't beat the people the party that steals the elections, take over the party that steals the election.

destroy the republican party from within.

4. it's not really infiltration. it's openly joining and working to make
that party, basically, the democratic party.

if we all did it, there's no way they could stop it.

we could take over their talk shows. we could run for office whomever we want. we could openly and blatantly steal the republican party away from them.

and there's not one g*dd*mn thing they could do about it, which is what i like best.

12. liberal is a very positive thing to be. i'm going to become
a republican and still be just as liberal. i'll just frame it in different terms and act as earnest and serious about it as i can be.

i've been a lifelong democrat, but i owe nothing to the democratic party as an entity. terry mccauliffe doesn't do shit for me.

when i vote, i go straight down the democratic side of the ballot. always have. and may continue to. but i'll sure piss off some right-wing idealogues by being a voice of moderation.

you know how furious those racist white, middle-class, suburban homeowners become when a person of color or a person from a social class they perceive inferior moves into their neighborhood? a couple million of us in their ranks would make the veins poke out on their foreheads.

20. I'm thinking seriously of joining the Green party or just be Independent
I'll continue to vote for local Dems if there aren't Greens available, but I'm quite impressed with how many local Greens are on ballots. Its encouraging, since the current leadership of Dems are not willing to embrace their liberal roots.

26. I Was
Independent until impeachment. I switched to Dem then so no Repub looking at registration numbers would see my little self on any list that didn't indicate 100% support of the President. I will not switch back until the Republican Party is no longer owned by the American Taliban.

7. I thought we should have done this before voting to make our votes count!
Then they wouldn't have been able to target democratic voting districts.

And I did say to partner last night "maybe we should just join them" (not really, but on paper) so if anything happens they'll leave us alone (which is highly unlikely I guess)

14. This idea has merit
I was thinking the same thing. The republican party is being taken over by the neocons and most other repubs just go along. I live in a very blue state (California) but in a conservative county which went for bush. I know these people. They would never vote for a democrat but they are socially tolerant and pro-environment. They had no idea their choice in this election was between fascism and democracy. They just voted for the repub like they always do. There are LOTS of republicans who are upset about the direction of their party. You might be surprised at how close their beliefs are to ours. 16. No, wait, hang on!!!
It's a good idea. In fact, yesterday I was determined to quit the Dem party and register with no party, as a protest against the spineless party leadership and poor campaign management. But then I remembered a story I read about how the Republican party has a systematic plan to destroy the Democratic party. This plan was hatched years ago, and was started with the redistricting in STATE LEGISLATURES, which put more repubs in those houses, and at the same time skewed districts to be more Republican and get more Repubs into U.S. congress. The repubs interviewed for the story SAID IT THEMSELVES- they want to get rid of our party. They are targeting Senators now, one at a time- Daschle was this year's big target, although they smeared every candidate they could.

So, if now a lot of Dems leave the party in protest, as I was on the verge of doing, it is playing into the Repubs hand.

Of course there is the other side- we make them THINK the party is shrinking while we infiltrate theirs. I am a little afraid of that strategy, but would like to hear more from people who think it would work. Persuade me!

19. we can't change the republican party. but we can change
who republicans are.

if they gerrymander and make the districts sympathetic only to republicans, we have a greater input into who becomes republicans.

no more tom delays, rick santorums, newt gingriches, etc. those guys become marginalized and put at the fringe.

i don't want to appease republicans. i want to see them destroyed. period. and i believe it will be much easier to stab them in the back than take them down head-on.

think how demoralizing a "republicans for ______" bumper sticker will be in 08?

They always have.

I know some who are already in place. ;-)

This is a good idea. Anyone who can stomach it should do so. It's a long term project but it's how America changes (destroys) whole nations. It will definitely work in this instance.

21. Move into their neighborhoods
I heard today that in Cobb County, Georgia (west suburban Atlanta, Newt Gingrich's home county), a black female Democrat named Annette Kesting defeated the Republican incumbent! She was a first-time candidate, 40 years old, running against a Republican incumbent who got this endorsement from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
"In the race to represent District 4 on the Cobb County Commission, incumbent Republican Woody Thompson has proved an effective and responsible public servant, and is the obvious choice over Democratic newcomer Annette Kesting, who offers an unfocused and unrealistic analysis of the challenges facing the county."
OK, she won in South Cobb County, which is quite different from the northern part (Newt's turf), but still--this is a very hopeful sign, I'd say.

This area used to be extremely redneck. The Kesting win is probably thanks to the changing demographics in South Cobb: as more black folks move in, whites panic and move farther out to exurbia. So long, suckers!

22. That would be like moving to Kansas
to get them to change their predominant popular vote to blue. You get absorbed, are miserable, and have no visible effect.

IMO, people should do the opposite. Blues w/in red states move to the blue. Declare your blueness publicly w/o fear (well as much) and impoverish the red states intellectually. A political diaspora.

29. The Nelson Art Gallery rocks!
My Grandma was a docent there for years, and I have spent many hours wandering the halls. Excellent all-around coverage of art, with some nice Henry Moore sculptures on the grounds.

Kansas City's a pretty cool place, and most of Kansas is nice if you can stomach the hard right-wing political slant. The Universities are (as you might imagine) more liberal than the rest of the state, KC included.
