Knighthood for Howard?
"Former prime minister John Howard says he is unaware of speculation that he will find out tonight whether he is to receive a knighthood.

"It's news to me", Mr Howard said this afternoon when contacted about the rumours which have been swirling since February.

He has been tipped to receive the The Most Noble Order of the Garter. Recipients of this highest and oldest order of chivalry, which has a maximum of 24 members, are traditionally announced by Buckingham Palace today - St George's Day, April 23."

I couldn't bear it!! All these years, I've been thanking the heavens that we don't have Imperial
Honours any more, and will never be subjected to the sight of Sir John and Lady Janette swanning
around.

All I can say, if this is true, is bring on the Republic!

1. Arise Sir Lying Rodent.
If he is knighted, I can't see what for.
And again it would highlight his ability to lie.
Wouldn't it be ironical if, when the Queen touches him on the shoulders
with the sword, he trips and falls on it.
Costello would smile wryly.

2. He didn't get it

Don't see why he would have, either. The Garter is essentially a reward for personal service to the Sovereign, and being PM is (supposed to be) a service to the people of Australia. Little Johnny was indulging in a bit of wishful thinking.

3. The Sovereign personally decides who gets the Garter,
and I couldn't imagine why the Queen would be so enamoured of the little
toad as to give him the most prestigious of knighthoods.

Which raises the question - who started this rumour in the first place?

4. So glad this turned out to be untrue
Although I am completely republican and anti-monarchy and royal honours are as impressive to me as membership to a DVD rental store is, the idea of that little smug bastard parading around as Sir John Howard makes me want to vomit.

I can just see him purposely making himself available for as many public gatherings as possible and appearing on TV, just so he can be announced - of course, he must be referred to as SIR John Howard (Calling him Mr Howard, John or Prime Minister will be completely disrespectful for a "great man" like him)
