Cancer claims Peter Andren

Former federal MP Peter Andren has died after a battle with inoperable cancer.

Mr Andren died this morning, ABC radio is reporting.

The independent member for the central NSW seat of Calare left parliament last month.

This is very, very sad. Peter Andren was perhaps the most decent, honest and courageous politician that Australia has ever had. His passionate commitment to his principles even at the risk of an electoral backlash is something we need much more of in Australian politics. I remember how he stood up and opposed the Tampa legislation and the persecution of asylum seekers in 2001 even though he knew that the Howard government's policies on the issue would be popular in his electorate.

Rest in peace Mr Andren. You were a good man and my thoughts, prayers, condolences and deepest sympathies go out to your family and friends. We need many, many more like you in politics. It would make the world a better place

1. It really is very sad.
The honest politicians are such a rare breed, and he was one of the best.

R.I.P. Peter Andren; you will be missed.

2. He gave it a really good shot. I always enjoyed his interviews.
He will be missed.
He was the epitome of purist politics.
This is where people voted for him, not a machine.
Too bad most people don't understand how our political system works.

3. I second that
Peter Andren was perhaps the most decent, honest and courageous politician that Australia has ever had.

Had a few dealings with him and he absolutely was in every way decent, honest and courageous. I like to think (despite my unfortunately unshakable atheism) of him drinking with Bernie Banton now.
