Britain's decision to ban Australia's "Where the bloody hell are you?" tourism ads has been met with a torrent of abuse and expletives by outraged officials. Irate tourism minister Fran Bailey left immediately for the UK to get the ban reversed, saying "Who the fuck do they think they are?"

"I'll tell these arseholes on the standards committee or whatever the fuck it is that they're full of shit. Australian hospitality is superb, and we won't be told how to advertise it by some Pommie c***," she said.

Also heading to Britain on the mercy mission is model Laura Bingle, who voices the slogan in the ad. Officials said Ms Bingle was only included on the trip so her mobile phone would be out of range, and she wouldn't receive any more text messages from rugby league players.

As the controversy widens, the origins of the swearing campaign are shrouded in mystery. Some believe the word "bloody" was accidentally inserted into the slogan after microphones picked up Morris Iemma and Steve Bracks discussing it at the recent Premiers' Conference. Other say the campaign was prepared as a contingency to be used in case Mark Latham became Prime Minister.

The Australian Republican Movement has also capitalised on the controversy. As the Queen visits Australia to open the Commonwealth Games, the ARM has launched a series of domestic ads with the slogan, "Why the bloody hell are you here?".
