Here in the US gas has gone from around $1\gal in 2000 to over $3\gal currently. The price has tripled in the US.

Has this happened in Europe or elsewhere?

With some quick conversions that means to be equal to a gallon the increases need by multiplied by 3.785. Think that means the prices has liked doubled?
We live in France. Seems to me,people don't get as upset about gas prices. I think that can be attributed to the fact they don't commute the crazy distances Americans do and their are alternative forms of public transit.

5. nevermind, i figured out why this is happening
In the US the taxes on fuel is so much larger that any change in the price in fuel would reflect more so in the US than elsewhere.

Say in the US taxes is $1 per gallon and oil costs is the rest.

So the price went from $1.5 to $3 a gallon if the oil costs rose $1.5.

In other countries, if taxes is $5 per gallon and oil costs is the rest.

So the price went from $6.5 to $8 per gallon if the oil costs rose $1.5.

$1.5 to $3 is a big jump.

$6.5 to $8 is not as noticable.

6. Well, not to put on a tinfoil hat but ...
Have you noticed the unexplained price drop during the last week or so? Gas is down about $.50/gallon in my area ... despite there being absolutely no reason for it. So, if it can go down despite no slackening of demand or growth in supply, then the price is likely artificially inflated. Gas prices have gone up so much because the oil companies are screwing us, plain and simple. They're now going down to help the Republicans in November. Once the mid-terms pass ... right back to $3.00/gallon again.
