Social mobility? Teeside miners great granddaughter to marry heir to the throne
AS BRITAIN gears up to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, it emerged today that the Royal bride-to-be’s great-great-grandfather came from Teesside!

Not only that, he was a former ironstone miner and steelworker, born in Guisborough!

....

Kate Middleton is a non-aristocratic English rose with a mix of middle and working class heritage, descended from a family of solicitors and landed gentry on her father’s side and butchers, plasterers, road sweepers and domestic servants on her mother Carole’s side.

She's come a long way.

1. On the other hand...
our real ruler, Cameron, is the descendant of a King (Victoria's uncle William IV), aided and abetted by George Osborne, son of a 17th baronet.

Maybe we haven't come such a long way.

3. Do we get a national holiday for this?
If not then I really don't give a flying f**k.

5. Possibly
Cameron: 'There should be a royal wedding bank holiday'

Though I expect with the date of the wedding so far undecided it'll never go through fast enough as adding a bank holiday part-way through the year would "affect business" or some such.

7. It's also quite possibly....
...not as important news as the floods in Cornwall, although our useless tabloid press think that nothing can possibly be as important as a royal wedding. :eyes:

12. Which means 4 bank holidays in 11 days
Friday 22nd, Monday 25th, Friday 29th, and Monday 2nd May. And then another, 4 weeks later.

Hey, it's great for the schools - the ones here go back on Tuesday 26th, and will now get just 3 days back before they take a 4 day weekend.

8. Why?
Edited on Fri Nov-19-10 05:03 AM by Nihil
Most parents/grandparents/etc would just be pleased that their
daughter/granddaughter/etc was happy.

Of course, I am well aware of various categories of bigots who
"wouldn't want their daughter to marry one(*)" but I think it is
unfair to ascribe that attitude to a long-dead stranger.

(*) regardless of which particular category of "other" the "one" happens to be

10. Sorry ...
... I must have been somewhat humour-challenged at the time ...
(or possibly already pissed off at the start of the media marathon).
