European Elections 2009, vote and check-in
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 02:47 AM by Anarcho-Socialist
I voted at 8.25am, cast my vote for the Far-Left No2EU coalition. Purely a wasted vote, but it oozes my conscience. The north east region has 3 MEPs and they're likely going to be split three ways between the main parties again.

1. Voting on my way to work this morning
Can't go for No2EU as I have no liking for Trots and my inclination is for a reformed EU rather than Little Englandism. So giving the Greens a shot this time.

Labour in the elections for the new (and IMHO spurious) parish council, as they're the best of a bad bunch and as a counterweight to the LibDem/Tory coalition at County Hall.

Can't remember a time since I first voted nearly 40 years ago when I've done so with less enthusiasm.

9. a bit unfair I think
their opposition to the EU is on anti-capitalist and imperialist grounds rather than national chauvinism, unlike UKIP et al. They're not against European integration itself but rather the EU's neoliberal modus operandi.

Characterising it as 'Trots' is somewhat unfair too. While it enjoys the support of two tiny Trot groups, it's trade union-led.

2. Voted
I'm another one who voted one way in the County Council elections and another in the Europeans.

3. One for the Greens @ 07:20 ...
... on the way to the station.

The EU voting "slip" was more like a toilet roll (mind you, some of
the people on the list match that comparison too ...).
I don't think I've ever had such a long paper where I only had to
cast a single vote! Even the assistants at the polling station referred
to it as "the scroll" :-)

That's exactly what was said by the ladies at the polling station when I went and voted early in the last Euro elections back in 2004!

5. Voted Green at lunchtime, 12:30, South-east England
I agree with those who were amazed by the scroll - there were 13 parties on my list. Smaller ones ranged from the Peace Party (which I might have considered if I knew anything about it) to a Christian party.

In the County Council election, I voted to re-elect the incumbent councillors for my ward - one Green and one LibDem. I haven't had much to do with either, but at least they are in opposition to the ruling Tories, whom I'm hoping against hope may lose overall control.

6. And the ever-popular "Roman Party, Ave!"
who I had heard of before. It's just one guy, a bus driver from Reading, if I recall, who stands in their local elections too. But "United Kingdom First" was a new one on me. It turns out they're that most dangerous of things - rebel accountants! http://www.accountancyage.com/accountancyage/news/2242234/icaew-rebels-stand-euro-poll-4667164

I voted Lib Dem in both elections.

Last pre-election (Euro) polls:

Still a lot of variation; it looks quite likely UKIP will beat the Lib Dems to 3rd place, and they might even beat Labour too. No surge for the BNP admitted yet.

7. Voted on my way home
Didn't really expect it to be anywhere as busy as it was, there was a queue forming to vote whilst I was there.

I voted Green, although I don't especially agree with a number of their policies it's at least a way of offsetting the BNP or UKIP votes.
