A future Conservative government 'will simply stop these plans', says Theresa Villiers
A Conservative government will stop a third runway at Heathrow from going ahead, the Tories confirmed today as it emerged that Gordon Brown is set to give BAA the green light to apply for expansion.
Theresa Villiers, the shadow transport secretary, gave a "clear signal" to private contractors considering bidding for the expansion project in the future that a Conservative government will "simply stop these plans".
She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "If a Conservative government is elected at the next general election there will not be a third runway at Heathrow. There is no chance of the planning process being completed before the date of the next election."
Villiers said the fight to block expansion had just begun. "This announcement
does not mean that a third runway is inevitable. It is not just the Conservative party opposing this; there is a huge coalition of opposition. This is just the start of the fight."

Boris Johnson, the Conservative mayor of London, urged Brown to reconsider "even at this late stage".
