:sarcasm:

So, not only did PA Consulting, according to BBC News "one of the companies that has been involved in developing the government's controversial ID card scheme", stash government data about prisoners and offenders on a USB stick and then "lose" it - it turns out that taking the data in this way was against the terms of their contract. Their staff are either incompetent or crooked: obviously the ideal people to be involved in the ID card project!

Of course, the government aren't blameless either. Why was it even possible to get that data onto a USB stick? If you don't want people walking out with sensitive data, you need to do a little more than just telling them not to.

1.  Sad to say Government IT systems
were much more secure when all the systems were run in house on old fashioned mainframes disconnected from the internet where the only way of accessing data was dumb terminals and the only output devices were dot matrix printers which produced reports of limited size. Nearly all the outsourcing companies that run government IT are incompetent and/or crooked. I know I work for one of them.
