Don't trash past, Fox tells Tories
Don't trash past, Fox tells Tories
5 October 2005

Liam Fox set out his agenda for the future of the Tories as he warned the party it must not trash its past.

Speaking just hours after leadership favourite David Davis told the party to stop apologising for being Conservatives, Dr Fox said they should be proud of their history.

"You don't set an agenda for the future by trashing your past," he said. "We mustn't lose sight of our own achievements. I am proud of how this party changed the face of Britain."

Dr Fox's speech and Mr Davis's will be seen as a criticism of David Cameron who said on Tuesday the party must make dramatic changes if it is to return to power.

1. If it weren't that, deep down, I know that we need an opposition party ...
... from a planet where the shuttle stops, in order to maintain checks and balances on the Dear Leader and his Peace-Loving Politburo, I would be willing Foxy to win.

The prospect of him scrawling everything that made the Tories unelectable everywhere in big blue capital letters and ensuring that they remain deep in the wilderness definitely has its attractive side ...

4. Until the Tories admit the problems caused by their past
They'll never get anywhere. It is plain to see to a great proportion of the population that Thatcherism wasn't too good for the country.

Until they get over the collective post-Thatcher hangover they all seem to have, they'll never get back into power.

5. "I am proud of how this party changed the face of Britain."?
Well, that should make him popular with Bliar's hated "urban intellectuals".
