Anyone living around the Bowmanville area of Southern Ontario??
My husband was hired to work in Courtice (leaving in two weeks) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little about the area.

TIA!

1. That's a fair piece form Kap
Courtice is actually closer to Oshawa than Bomanville. It's primarily a bedroom community for Oshawa. Bowmanville still has some of the small town feel, and a mediocre zoo. Oshawa is automobiles. They build them and drive them, a lot. Most of the urban stuff is clustered along the lakefron, though, so you can get away from it fairly easily. If you're used to Kapuskasing that might be a good thing.

Is this a long-term gig?

BTW have you seen any news lately of the OPP cow-shooting west of Kap, took place a few weeks ago, or so?

3. Yes, it's a long, long way from Kap.....
...that's what makes it sooooo attractive - that and very little snow!

We're hoping it'll turn into a long term thing. Basically, my husband will be teaching at CSS for the rest of the semester and hopes to be hired on full time as a replacement for a teacher on mat-leave. It's not guaranteed, but in the mean time, it allows him to apply for other postings within the board which gives him preferential status over a teacher applying from outside the board.

In other words, we're playing the hiring game; not great, especially with me gestating, but we want out of here bad enough that we're willing to take a calculated risk (he didn't quit his job up here, he just took a leave of abscence)

And no, I didn't hear about the cow getting shot. I haven't read the local newspaper for a couple of weeks. Do you have any details?

Thanks for your help!

5. Well,
apparently a cattle liner was opened up, cattle escaped, the OPP directed that they be shot and the carcasses ended up in freezers.

2. A good friend lives in Bowmanville
And has told me that the crime rate is really up. I imagine that is spilling over from Oshawa(?).

Still a relatively nice, small town feel though.

Good luck to you and yours!

4. Thanks for the good wishes.
I hadn't thought about crime rate to be honest. Is it violent crimes or B&E type crime that's on the rise? I'm not surprised given the insanity that's going on in Toronto lately.

Guess I'm going to have to get used to locking my door at night before I go to bed.

Thanks again.

6. not violent no....
Crime rate being a relative term here....I mean, we are talking about Canada. lol

Bowmanville is really booming right now actually. Tons of new subdivisions & schools going in. It is great for access to the 401, which I imagine, adds to the appeal.

If you're interested in small rural hamlets on the fringe, there is the likes of Orono, Tyrone, Hampton and Solina. (10 mins from Bowmanville).....and of course, Newcastle is 5 mins.
