Gay Marriage Debate - Harper Screws Up....
From the Toronto Star:

Harper speech stirs wide outcry:
Comments during gay marriage debate roundly condemned
Insulting `to play politics with an ancient historical wrong'

"Let us not forget it was the Liberal party that said none is too many when it came to Jews fleeing from Hitler. It was the Liberal party that interned Japanese Canadians in camps on Canada's West Coast, an act Pierre Trudeau refused to apologize or make restitution for, leaving it to Brian Mulroney to see justice done," Harper said.

<snip>

A range of groups responded yesterday with fury, saying Harper went too far. A flurry of outraged news releases descended on media offices from the National Association of Japanese Canadians, the Chinese Canadian National Council, the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, the Canadian Buddhists Civil Liberties Association, the World Sikh Organization, the British Columbia Unitarian Church and the Muslim Canadian Congress.

Harper's done it now. None of these instances have anything to do with allowing gay marriage. All it does is highlight instances when the Liberal Party has fallen down on the job of protecting human rights.

It's a pride thing now for them, I can't see any but the most hard-core anti-gay MP's in the party voting against gay marriage now.

At least I hope so.

Thoughts?

1. Harper lost his mind
Only a fool would spout that kind of nonesense, especially when it comes from the man who is intent on keeping tolerance out of Canada.
What did he call it? "staggering hypocrisy"? Right. This from the leader of a party founded on a weasel's deal. Talk about getting your priorities confused - why does he think that these instances are going to have any impact on the debate over gay marriage. The fact of the matter is that now, 2005, the Liberals are taking the issue of tolerance seriously. What has Steven Harper done to correct any of these injustices that he spoke of? Nothing.
Nope. And now after all this bullshit about the liberals not being tolerant, he is going to vote NO on C-38 - an indication of his own personal intolerance.
Now that is staggering hypocracy.

2. Am I surprised?
NOT
Give any Reform/Alliance/right wing of the Conservative/ enough rope and they seemingly take it as a challenge to see precisely how much of their foot they can stuff in their mouth.

3. The red-tories will split the right into two parties again.
Thanks Mr. Harper. :)

6. I think the red-tories are too stoned to notice or something.
"Even though Stephen Harper publicly embarasses our party on a daily basis with his idiotic rambling, I feel oh so loved and at home in the Alliance Party because he's letting us have a free vote on the gay marriage bill."

4. Harper's problem is that he can't hide his racist, bigoted
attitude even though there is a pretense that the old racist Reform party is 'dead'. Give the man enough rope and he hangs himself every time.

He just doesn't get it. Most Canadians don't support his bigoted, ugly agenda no matter how they try to dress it up and couch it in coded words.

5. Whew!
This is a relief; for a minute there I thought the dumb son of a bitch had grown a brain.
