Ottawa’s own poll downplays crime concerns
OTTAWA—The Harper government is pressing ahead with its multibillion-dollar tough-on-crime agenda despite internal polling that suggests most Canadians don’t see crime as a big issue.

When asked in January which issue the government should focus on most, only one per cent of people answered crime. The top answers were the economy and the recession, jobs and health care.

The poll was published recently in the government’s public repository of the opinion research surveys it conducts.

Even helping earthquake-ravaged Haiti ranked higher than dealing with crime, garnering four per cent of support among those polled.

So what may we draw from this?

They want to make it an issue. By virtue of being the government they focus the news because they make history. What we see is the reporting.

The opposition parties should ignore their issues and hammer them on our issues.

1. "The opposition parties should ignore their issues and hammer them on our issues."
Yep, I agree. They can use polls like this to point out how "out of touch" the cons are to Canadians REAL concerns, hammer them with the issues and back it up with poll results.

2. But what about unreported polls?
I heard that people who were never polled have not reported a great deal of crime (or they would have, had they been polled and had they chosen to answer the phone and had they chosen to report the unreported crimes).
