March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government is shifting its rhetoric on the Canadian dollar and playing down concerns about the currency’s gains in a bid to brace companies and consumers for parity with the U.S. dollar.

In a March 15 interview with Bloomberg Television, Flaherty said government concerns about the dollar have lessened in recent months and the dollar is at a level that continues to keep the nation’s economy competitive.
That contrasts with his remarks last August, when Flaherty expressed concern that“rapid” changes in the currency could hurt businesses, and said “steps” could be taken to dampen movements. That raised speculation the central bank would intervene, selling Canadian dollars in foreign exchange markets to weaken their value.
