Over 2,200 gay couples tied the knot in Quebec between 2004 and 2008

MONTREAL - In the first five years that gay marriage was legal in Quebec, more than 2,200 same-sex couples tied the knot in the province, a new study has found.

The findings, published Tuesday by Quebec's statistics institute, show gay weddings made up two per cent of the province's marriages during the five years.

Quebec legalized gay marriage in March 2004, two years after the province started allowing same-sex civil unions. There are only small legal differences between Quebec's gay civil unions and marriages.

The results also reveal that 17 per cent of same-sex couples who wed in Quebec came from abroad to exchange vows ...
