Goodyear retreats on evolution
Science minister ends evolution brouhaha
The Canadian Press

March 17, 2009 at 5:35 PM EDT

OTTAWA — Canada's Science Minister has cut short a brewing controversy over his views on evolution.

Gary Goodyear raised eyebrows when he refused to tell The Globe and Mail newspaper if he believes in the science of evolution.

But the Minister of State for Science and Technology flatly said today that he does indeed believe in evolution.

Mr. Goodyear said he refused to answer Tthe Globe question because it was “irrelevant” and his beliefs have nothing to do with government policy.

Well, that didn't take long. Although Paul Wells calls it Lamarckian.

Here's the CTV interview. Decide for yourself.

1. His explantion was pretty confused
I don't even know if I would call it Lamarkian. It seems like he just used "evolution" as a synonym for "change" or "adapt". Even the most hard-line creationist would agree that there is change and adaptation.

Besides that, he seems to have a foot fetish, given his focus on shoes in the explanation.

2. Well, he had to say something
given that this blew up in his face. And I imagine there was a nasty call from Harper, who doesn't want to get labelled like Stockwell Day was.

So this was sort of an all-around-the-mulberry-bush explanation. :)
