Today.... I'm interested to see if the National Post also gets folded.

1. I was in Montreal recently
The Montreal Gazette seemed quite pathetic, for a big city daily. It makes the Edmonton Journal look good. Both are Canwest products.

The Asper sons seem to have really run the business into the ground.

2. Gazette is a piece of shit
Any canwest paper is. These sons are businessmen, so they only look at the bottom line and don't understand the concept that a quality product will secure your market share. The globe and mail, for instance, has fiercely loyal readers and because of that it will always be around. Canwest just treat people like cash machines and figure if as long as they have letters on a page people will think it's a newspaper.. that doesn't work. And they're gonna find out real soon because the Globe and Mail now aims to be a Toronto/Vancouver focussed paper. With the Sun and Province (Vancouver's two dailies owned by Canwest) carrying the chain, and with Canwest gutting and destroying those papers (Frances Bula quitting was a big one) the Globe is in prime position to take them out. And once those papers are gone, there's no more cash cow.

3. Canwest is down to 85 cents a share now
The operative phrase is "circling the drain".
