OIL AS PUBLIC UTILITY
With sunrise last Friday morning came a crude awakening for Canadians: a whopping, mind-boggling increase in the price of fuel.

Oil and gas companies continue to insist that it's not their fault -- that there's a whole litany of reasons why they have no choice but to charge more. Not even the politicians on the hustings are buying that -- but what's it going to take to keep gas prices down?

James Laxer says he has a solution. He believes we should run Canada's petroleum industry as a set of public utilities. He's an economist, author and professor of Political Science at York University, in Toronto.

1. So what's the plan when the production peaks?

2. You Tell
Me.

If production exceeds generation then there will be a peak.

What is your point.

3. I don't oppose this position, but we're barking up the wrong tree.
While the nationalization of the oil industry and the building of refineries in our own borders are not positions that I personally oppose, I think we're best to focus on weaning ourselves off oil. It's not like the reserve in Canada are particularly easy and cheap to extract anyways.
