Mulroney 'never worked for Thyssen'

The German arms manufacturer said to have paid Brian Mulroney hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash for international representation insists it has no knowledge of the former prime minister doing any work on its behalf.

In interviews with The Globe and Mail and CBC, a former Thyssen executive and a spokeswoman for the company, which has changed names after merging with another company in 1999, said they are not aware of the lobbying that the former prime minister says he did for Thyssen in China, Russia and France between 1993 and 1994.

"He never worked for Thyssen," Winfried Haastert, a former Thyssen executive, said in a phone interview.

Mr. Haastert, who was embroiled in a similar scandal in Germany in the 1990s over the distribution of lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber's secret commissions, said that as far as he knew, Mr. Mulroney's only connection to Thyssen was when Mr. Mulroney was still prime minister and the company urged him to support its proposed light-armoured vehicle factory in Cape Breton. But when the project was killed by Mr. Mulroney's government because it was too expensive, Mr. Haastert said he considered Mr. Mulroney's involvement over.

A curious job Mulroney had. Apparently, nobody but him knew that he had it, including the people he was supposed to be working for. It paid well though...
