PM's adviser recommends limiting Mulroney-Schreiber inquiry: reports
A special adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper will suggest a scaled-back inquiry into the past business dealings between Brian Mulroney and Karlheinz Schreiber, say published reports.

University of Waterloo president David Johnston, appointed by Harper to define the scope of any potential inquiry, has suggested an inquiry focused on whether Mulroney acted improperly in 1993 when he accepted cash payments from Schreiber, said the Canadian Press and CTV News.

Johnston offered his recommendation to Harper on Wednesday, and the prime minister is expected to make his decision no later than Monday, said the reports.

Johnston rejected a full-scale inquiry into the relationship, saying the RCMP has already investigated the allegations of possible kickbacks in the 1988 sale of Airbus jets to Air Canada.

The reports say Johnston's report offers Harper the option of declining to order a public inquiry if he is satisfied that the ethics committee has fully explored the matter.

It should be quite the weekend. The right wing pundits will be repeating the "Mulroney did nothing wrong" mantra, and the pollsters will be polling furiously behind the scenes.
