I understand why you'd feel you should apologize to us in particular. We, individually, are right here in rather large numbers, so you "know" us; and we, collectively, are your next-door neighbour and long-time ally and friend.
I think collective apologies by individuals are nice. I appreciated not just condolences, but apologies, from USAmericans after the killing of the Cdn soldiers in Afghanistan. Apologies are just plain good manners (and like most things that are good manners to do, are good for the person doing them too, because they make other people like them better ;) ).
You aren't personally responsible for what happened in the election. (And actually, I think that's something that a lot of people in the US, who worked hard and feel frustrated and somehow like they failed, need to consciously remember -- nobody's responsible for what someone else does. We do have responsibilities to other people and our societies -- but we can't make anybody do anything, or change.)
But you as an individual are also part of a collective, and you're as entitled to speak for it as anyone else. For you to want to speak up on its behalf, to dissociate yourself from those in it who spoke in a way that you want to reject and denounce, is a pretty natural and quite decent impulse.
So from me: thanks.
