A 40th Canadian soldier has died on the mission to Afghanistan, according to a news report that surfaced Saturday after NATO confirmed militants killed an alliance soldier, but didn't specify the victim's nationality.
The Canadian Press, citing unnamed military officials in Kandahar, reported at about 11:45 a.m. ET Saturday that the soldier was Canadian, but the report has not been confirmed by the Department of National Defence.
The attack on the NATO patrol occurred near a base in the volatile Panjwaii district of Kandahar province — the same area as a previous attack on Tuesday that killed two Canadian soldiers and wounded five others. More than 2,000 Canadian troops are deployed in the southern region and Canadians are leading the NATO forces there.
Militants detonated a roadside bomb and assaulted the patrol with small arms fire, NATO said. One of the patrolling vehicles was damaged. Attack helicopters and an explosives disposal team were dispatched to the area.
