What else should I see in Nova Scotia??
I've sketched out an itinerary for my GF and I. She hasn't travelled since her honeymoon, 25 years ago. I was in the Maritimes 5 years ago and have some clue about what I want to see in more detail.

I've included a lot of touristy stuff, but am I missing anything, any jewels?
Halifax - Citadel,
Peggy's Cove- Touristy stuff
Lunenburg- Touristy stuff
Truro- Tidal bore
Confederation Bridge- just because
Green Gables- Oh well, she wants to.
Baddeck- Bell Museum
Cabot Trail- Touristy stuff
Whale watching- Touristy stuff
Louisbourg- History.

AND

???????

1. Shag Harbor UFO crash site
Just for the hell of it.
Yarmouth, way in the south (hope I spelled it right).
I heard Oak Island was being reopened to the public.
Halifax - Pier 21, especially if any of your ancestors came through there.
Just about anywhere along the coastal secondary highways, really.

2. WE don't have the time for Yarmouth,
it would be a huge detour. Pier 21 was in the Halifax touristy stuff category.

Oak island googling revealed that the island will be open for 3 days of conducted tours/displays on August 11, 12, 13. We'll be in Nova Scotia so a little judicious revamping of the itinerary made a visit possible.

See here:

for details.

Thanks.:hi:

6. Have a good trip
Oak Island was closed to the public when I went by it a few years ago. It always sounded fascinating, although I don't know whether you can actually see much.

It is a gorgeous part of Canada.

3. Well, if you take a quick flight to Toronto, I'll be happy to
Edited on Sun Jul-09-06 02:33 AM by Jazz2006
show you around and to provide you with info on all kinds of places to see and things to do. But I haven't really anything to add to the NS list with the additions made by daleo, sorry.

(I realize from your posts above that you haven't time for such a distant side trip this time around ... but if you and your girlfriend ever decide to come to Toronto, the offer stands.)

:hi:

9. the tidal bore in Truro is not that exciting
a better way to experience it is to go Tidal bore rafting on the Shubenacadie river http://www.tidalborerafting.com/
if you want dinner in Truro, there is a FANTASTIC restaurant downtown called Culina Dea, their kitchen store fronts on Prince St near the Dairy Queen. The restaurant is around back, next to the MacQuarries pharmacy. FANTASTIC pork Tenderloin and rack of lamb. it is **** for here but probably value prices compared to Toronto. ask for the spicy salad. not open SUndays. The owners are actually from Toronto.

as a fellow aggie, may I suggest visiting some of our fine farmers markets www.nsfarmersmarkets.ca

Try and schedule a visit to the Halifax Farmers Market, Oldest in Canada, unfortunately only open on Saturday, but that will change if the Pier 22 project goes ahead (big grey building next to the Pier 21 museum. Truro's is alright, I might see you there.

if you turn north at Truro and head towards Tatamagouche, there are a couple of great little Pork shops on the route - the Pork Shoppe and the Bavarian in Dennmark. There are also the warmest beaches north of the Carolinas on that shore

and wine tours, either Malagash - Jost Wines or in the Annapolis Valley St Fammille, Grand Pre and Habitant. actually visiting Wolfville and Grand Pre (Acadian Heritage) are good stops. there is a great cheese maker down there too in Port Williams Foxhill cheese. most of these places have websites.

have fun

10. how about a map?
The Confederation Bridge is between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, and Green Gables House is in Cavandish, Prince Edward Island.
Hard to see them from Nova Scotia.
But to answer your question, I reccomend Mahone Bay. It's very close to Lunenburg and quite picturesque. The Mug and Anchor pub has excellent food and a great deck overlooking the water.
Any of the locals will be glad to give you directions.
Have a great trip. :hi:

13. MY GF wants to see Green Gables
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 01:57 PM by achtung_circus
so we'r going from Halifax to Truro across the Confederation Bridge to Cavendish, "doin" Green Gables, stopping for supper at the New Glasgow lobster supper and spending the night in a B&B in Georgetown.

Next Morning, drive to Woods Island, across on the ferry to Pictou, then on to a B&B near Baddeck. I've seen Green Gables and the theme parks associated, I'd be quite happy to stay in NS & especially Cape Breton, but...

14. It sure sounds to me like you have a wonderful trip planned!
I was born in Sydney, Cape Breton Island but left at a very early age. Two years ago, I flew into Halifax, rented a car and drove all over Nova Scotia and it was one of my most memorable holiday trips. One suggestion I might give, maybe it's too late, is to visit the Nova Scotia Highland Village and stay at the Highland Heights Inn. I ended up there by accident and it was wonderful. The view and the peace and quiet gave me the BEST night's sleep I had had in a long time.

Here is a link about the Village, etc.:

16. If you're going to Mahone Bay
see if you can do the ferry out to Tancook Island. Beautiful ride.

For reference, that area was used in the movie Dolores Claiborne..

11. Cape Split in the Annapolis Valley
I live in the Annapolis Valley - lots to see, eat and drink here! I live on the Minas Basin - check it out...

http://www.valleyweb.com/fundytides/
Perhaps the most awesome display of the tides on our planet occurs at Cape Split, on the southern side of the entrance to Minas Basin (Cape Split may be reached by a pleasant two-hour walk along a popular hiking trail from the village of Scots Bay, which is a 30-minute drive north of Wolfville). Here at the time of the mid-point of an incoming tide, for a considerable distance the forest on the towering cliffs is filled with a hollow roar produced by the turbulence of the waters surging over the submarine ridges below. The currents exceed 8 knots (4m/s), and the flow in the deep, 5 km-wide channel on the north side of Cape Split equals the combined flow of all the streams and rivers of Earth (about 4 cubic kilometres per hour). Three hours later the spectacle pauses, and then begins flowing in the opposite direction.

15. Inverness and Mabou
My wife and I took a driving trip through Nova Scotia. We planned on going all around Cape Breton but once we hit Inverness and stayed at a rental cottage we decided not to leave.

Absolutely beautiful country.
