Environment Minister Claude Béchard said Quebec voters will judge Mr. Harper's government if it reneges on a commitment to give the province $328-million to fight climate change.
“If the federal government decides not to contribute any money, we will clearly identify where the responsibility lies and explain why we will not be able to meet the Kyoto targets,” Mr. Béchard said in the National Assembly yesterday.
Mr. Béchard said he still hopes that once Ottawa tables its Clean Air Bill next fall, money will be made available to the provinces for environmental projects such as public transit. He predicted Ottawa that, in the end, Quebec will get the funds it needs to abide by the Kyoto Protocol.
“We will table projects and find the means to get the $328-million to meet the Kyoto targets…That's what I've said and that's what we will do,” Mr. Béchard said.
