N.L. to work towards Kyoto targets: official

ST. JOHN'S -- The Newfoundland and Labrador government plans to play its part in reducing greenhouse gases, even if Ottawa decides not to abide by the Kyoto treaty on climate change, a provincial government official said Tuesday.

The province is moving ahead with its own plan to cut emissions, said John Drover, director of policy and planning for Newfoundland and Labrador's Environment Department.

"We've got our own climate change action plan,'' he said. "It does depend heavily on the federal government, but we're taking action right now.''

Drover said while the Kyoto treaty doesn't break down emission targets by province, Newfoundland's plan is largely influenced by the international agreement.
