OTTAWA -- Trade Minister David Emerson has written to angry constituents saying they'll have to wait until the next election for a chance to oust him from the seat he won as a Liberal before switching to the Conservatives.
Manuel Pereda, a constituent who has led efforts to oust Mr. Emerson from his Vancouver riding, says he met the minister recently to discuss the matter and then got a follow-up letter.
In the letter, Mr. Emerson says he respects the need for a constructive dialogue.
"As I have stated on many occasions previously, I will continue that dialogue in earnest with all of my constituents -- remaining accountable to them in the next federal election," he wrote.

Mr. Pereda wants the law changed to force party-switching MPs to resign and run in a by-election. He said it's time for new accountability and the Emerson case will be part of the debate.
"As long as he is a member of Parliament without a mandate, he is an example of why the system has to be changed."http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20060516.EMERSPROTEST16/TPStory/National
