Harper wants immigrants' credentials recognized: McGuinty
Mississauga — The federal Conservative government wants to work with the provinces to help immigrants have their foreign credentials recognized in Canada, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Saturday.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper brought up the issue at the dinner meeting he had with the premiers at 24 Sussex Drive on Friday night, Mr. McGuinty said after a luncheon speech to a Liberal policy convention, dedicated to the issue of immigration.

"That's one of things Harper raised last night as an issue that he would like us to collaborate with him on, which is the recognition of credentials from the foreign community," Mr. McGuinty said. "We're more than pleased to do that."

"As long as we're seeing doctors, engineers with training driving taxicabs, it shows that Dalton McGuinty is not addressing the real issues for new immigrants."

What about the accountants?

So kids don't bother about going to university. Help the governments save money.

1. I don't get your objection.
BC could stand to have more doctors and nurses, for example, and qualified immigrants ARE driving taxicabs.

Funny thing is, potential immigrants to Canada must be either skilled workers (no taxicab drivers) or "successful business people" before they can qualify for a Permanent Resident Visa. (http://www.canadaimmigrationlaw.net/Immigration/FAQ/qualifications.htm) But once they get here, they can't get work in their chosen professions.

At least that seems to be the case in BC.

2. It's Not An Objection
If one requires more doctors, lawyers or engineers then they should invest to see that the system encourages these people. By short circuiting the system and relying on immigration to fill the requirements then you don't have to invest here.

If the system blocks qualified people from practicing then it should be corrected. So what they appear to be saying is the present system is wrong.

My suspicion is that it is not that clear.

It is the similar line that we are hearing about trades people. The need is not to create a decent wage and a decent lifestyle but to see that the bodies are there to produce the widgets. When the widgets aren't required any more, then it's back to the common sense revolution.

4. And until these new, young, Canadian doctors graduate from medical school,
we're supposed to do what, exactly? Wait in line for a doctor (for example)? Sorry, been there, done that.

Certainly we have to invest more into education that creates new professionals. But in the meantime, new immigrants would better serve themselves and their adopted society by being allowed to work in professions they're trained in, and for which they have talent. From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs. We need services, and they have services to offer.

5. Seems
Pretty obvious to me then.

Get McGuinty to establish a Doctor By Government (DBG) instead of relying on Doctor By Doctor (DBD). You want it, then you can have it. It really is that simple.

Why, it is just common sense.

3. "BC could stand to have more doctors and nurses"
So could New Brunswick, Idaho and County Cork--

I know a solution...why NOT 'headhunt' the Third World for key personnel and then, we can sell the expertise back to Third World countries so they will perpetually dependent!!

Clearly a shithole like Ghana (facing a profound medical crisis) doesn't really NEED their medical staff more than say some retiree in Cowichan--so it's good that Ghana, which has one of the lowest doctor to pop. ratios in the world, should have MORE of it's trained doctors working in New York City than Ghana.

YES INDEED-We should really really try to get more qualified technical personnel to offset our governments'/political parties own failed ability to train and deploy OUR human resources within a corrupt system of supply and demand, that produced the shortage in the first place.

Good to see Progressives and Liberals showing solidarity with Imperialism.

Yes...let's pluck one of the lucky savages from the wild.
