What do John Gard, Peg Lautenschlager, the ACLU and SpongeBob SquarePants have in common?
Nothing, if we can help it.
Stick with us here for a minute as we try to explain. Six state employees, along with the American Civil Liberties Union, are suing the state, alleging it discriminates against gay and lesbian state-government employees because it doesn’t provide same-sex partners with health insurance and family leave benefits.
Typically, when the state gets sued, the attorney general’s office does the defending. But some Republicans in the state Legislature are concerned that Lautenschlager, the Democratic attorney general, won’t defend the state with the necessary vigor because they say she supports the ACLU.
So, the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Legislative Organization voted to name an outside law firm to defend the Legislature, which would name itself a co-defendant in the lawsuit.

What I find so surprising is the fact that a Gannett rag is siding overtly against the Deficit Republicans who appear to want to waste money on a lawsuit that, given the reality of the times, will likely go nowhere.
