Petri to hold 6th District town hall meetings in March
Petri will never be confused with a Democrat, but he is one of the lesser ideological Republican Congressmen. In addition, it is likely that he will be retiring at the end of his current term and thus may be less likely to toe the Republican Party line and more responsive to the needs of his 6th District Constituents. Give him an earful in person...

4. Reporting from the meeting
I attended the Town Hall meeting in Menasha this morning.

The majority of the crowd were senior citizens, not unexpected given the time of day and politics in general. Correspondingly, the majority of comments made were in relation to SS, with input ranging from the completely ignorant and pedantic to thoughtful and considered. Petri mostly listened and often commented that there are many ideas being floated but no firm proposals yet, blah, blah, blah.

Other comments included concerns about Medicare/Medicaid funding with a very poignant statement from a family physician.

Numerous veterans expressed their concerns about the Veterans Benefits and several of those speakers expressed their dissatisfaction with our involvement in Iraq, one going so far as too vocally object to our violation of Geneva protections and basic human rights.

One other notable comment was made by a John Bircher who'd distributed literature opposing various trade agreements (WTO, NAFTA, FTAA, etc..). As much as I disagree with everything the Birchers represent, I had to nod my head in agreement on these points.

Through it all I sat and listened until the Freeptard sitting next to me stood up and railed against Affirmative Action blaming all of our educational ills on AA. Freeptard had even brought his high school age daughter with as a prop, explaining how he didn't want her to be "discriminated" against. I would have continued my silence but in this case, Petri diverged from his pattern of "listening" to openly agree with the Freeper. I couldn't take it and RAISED my voice to let Petri know he was spewing falsehoods. Petri made some lame defense and the Freeper defended his ignorance, to which I responded, "If your daughter doesn't get into college, it's because of the defective reasoning and lack of critical thinking she's learning at home.

After the meeting adjourned, numerous people came up and complimented me on my stand and reporter from the Post-Crescent interviewed me as well.

I retract any comments I have made given Petri the benefit of the doubt. Attend the meetings and let him have it!!!!!!
