Next People's Legislature meets March 19th
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 03:12 PM by sybylla
I just got this message by e-mail. I can't make it this time but I thought perhaps others in the northern half of the state might. IMHO, the first one was an excellent "multi-party" experiment and I highly recommend it for a boring, snowy March day.

The People’s Legislature convenes March 19 in northwest Wisconsin
‘The People's Legislature,’ a multi-partisan citizen assembly devoted to building a statewide, grassroots movement to take back government in Wisconsin, continues its regional meetings around the state, with the next forum slated for Saturday, March 19 in Cable, WI at the Telemark Resort.

The chief aim of the regional assembly is to further the agenda that was agreed upon by the more than 1,100 people present at the first event. The resolutions adopted at the first People’s Legislature event included:

Comprehensive campaign finance reform that includes
public financing of state election campaigns, and full
disclosure of political contributions that restores the
state's ban on corporate campaign contributions;

Independent ethics enforcement by combining the state
Elections Board and Ethics Board into a single
enforcement agency under the direction of a politically
independent board;

Competitive elections through reform of legislative
redistricting modeled after the system used in Iowa, and

Preservation of local fiscal control to prevent arbitrary
and centralized budget limits on local units of
government. Wisconsin Democracy Campaign director Mike McCabe, Carol Lobes with the Center for Democratic Action, and FightingBob.com editor Ed Garvey are among the group of organizers speaking at the forum on March 19.

The event will be held from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is free, however a donation of $5, payable by check or cash, is requested at the door to help cover the cost of the event. Everyone is welcome to attend the People’s Legislature and may register online.

In addition to the regional meetings, a petition drive is underway to build the 1,100-member People's Legislature into a statewide network of 50,000 or more.
