Clark hopes to revive conservation corps

A discontinued jobs relief program which once provided job skills and education vouchers for Wisconsin young people and provided valuable labor for statewide conservation projects might live again under a new state Assembly bill.

The Wisconsin Conservation Corps, originally created in 1983 to employ small crews of young people in building trails, park shelters, and other conservation projects, was discontinued in 2003. Now, Assembly reps. Fred Clark, D-Baraboo, and Cory Mason, D-Racine, are hoping to give the program new life at a time when, Clark says, such a program is badly needed.

"There are a lot of young people without jobs right now," Clark said. "This is a program that ... produced a generation of skilled young people who are today benefitting from that training we were able to provide.

"I'm really excited about bringing it back."
