Wisconsin law enforcement agencies are launching criminal investigations into third-party ad groups' commercials against Democratic candidates.
Versions of this story are also showing up in various newspapers.
Wisconsin Democrats had requested an investigation into what the party considers false ads against its legislative candidates and a congressman.
The Coalition for America's Families and the Wisconsin Institute for Leadership, two outside political groups, have run televisions ads attacking Rep. Jim Soletski, Rep. Jeff Smith and candidate Kristen Dexter. The Democrats claim the ads falsely accuse the trio of supporting free health care for illegal aliens.
The Kewaunee Co. District Attorney has requested that the Brown Co. District Attorney act as a special prosecutor to investigate ads from the National Republican Congressional Committee, Coalition for America's Families, and the Wisconsin Institute for Leadership attacking Congressman Steve Kagen and Rep. Jim Soletski.
The Green County District Attorney has referred to Attorney General JB Van Hollen the complaint regarding the Coalition for America's Families ads attacking Assembly candidate Trish O'Neil.
The Buffalo County District Attorney has referred to the Buffalo County Sheriff the complaint regarding the Coalition for America's Families ads attacking Rep. Jeff Smith and Assembly Candidate Kristen Dexter.
The Clark County District Attorney has referred to the Clark County Sheriff the complaint regarding the Coalition for America's Families ads attacking Rep. Jeff Smith and Assembly candidate Kristen Dexter.
The National Republican Campaign Committee, meanwhile, has run ads attacking U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen's voting history on taxes and accused him of supporting free health care for illegal aliens, too.
NRCC spokesman Ken Spain says Kagen wants to level false charges at the 11th hour. The two political groups didn't return messages.
