1. It's a place where Ohioans migrate
Heh. Seriously, there are a LOT of DUers from Ohio who've moved here.

Well, it's a bigger city with a small-town feel. It's growing, but not at the rate of say, the Chicago area. We've lost a lot of manufacturing jobs in the automotive industry so we aren't as "blue-collar" as we once were. We have deep socialist roots and a very interesting history (I HIGHLY recommend this DVD series - http://www.themakingofmilwaukee.com/). Sadly, it's a very racially segregated city. There are a LOT of things to do, from music and festivals and museums. The people are very friendly (as long as you're not a FIB). There at least a couple local bars on every corner in some neighborhoods.

What else would you like to know? What area, if any, are you considering? If you don't mind saying, what line of work are you in?

2. I'm a mainframe programmer
I have no idea what areas at the moment. I just got a call from a headhunter up there this morning. By this afternoon, she had arranged for two telephone interviews for me. One with a bank (I think it was US Bank) and the other with a company called Metavante. I'm out of work right now and a lot of the mainframe jobs around here are being shipped overseas. Fortunately, I'm single, no kids, no house, so I can go anywhere.

Ideally, I like living on the outskirts of cities more so then in the city itself. I lived in the burbs in NJ, CT, MA and now here in OH (Man will it be nice to get away from the OSU nuts, their obsession borders on disturbing). I'm love having the city close and going to the city for nights out but don't like living there.

What is mass transit like up there? I got used to MA real quick but here in OH there is nothing... like hardly even any buses. Do they sell Sabrette hot dogs? What are the good burb areas? Whats a FIB?

3. ok...
I have friends who worked for (and some still do) Metavante. They're big here. Mixed reviews. I'll specifically ask a few. US Bank is also a big employer in area. As are GE Healthcare and Quad Graphics.

There are some wonderful suburban areas right outside the city, Bayview to the south, Wauwatosa to the west and some very beautiful areas in "Lake Country" further west. It's red out here in Lake Country, but very beautiful and relaxing.

Mass transit here sucks unless you're IN or right next to the city. The Milwaukee bus line is pretty good (not great, but good). If you're west of Wauwatosa, it's laughable. I've never heard of Sabrette hot dogs, but we have the best brats this side of Germany. I mentioned a few suburban areas, let me know if you'd like more info on them. A "FIB" is an acronym for "Fucking Illinois Bastard". (There are a lot of hard feelings between Wisconsin natives and Illinoisans who "summer" here).

Good luck!

4. FIB, bwahahaha, thats wicked funny
Sabrettes are my favorite hot dog, when I lived in Jersey, they were all over the place. Really good all beef hot dogs and they make their own onion sauce to put on top, chopped onions in a red sauce that has just a bit of a tang to it, with sauerkraut their awesome. Brats are great too, I never really had them till I came to OH but I have developed a taste for them.

I think I'm good on the info for now, at least until I interview and see if they offer me a job. Thanks for all the info, much appreciated!

Joe

6. I have heard
I was just talking to Lizziegrace on the phone and found the she is now in Milwaukee, hahaha, I knew she had moved but did not realize where she was. She could only talk for a minute, her daughter needed her, she is still in the dark out here (still big blackouts all over this area from the hurricane). If I do end up there, I'll look forward to joining in the fun!

18. just stop it!
I see Wisconsinites on this board are still spreading the toxic, hateful FIB garbage. I may be from Illinois but I am a good person, a good driver and a good Democrat. I thought this board was a place to unite with others of like mind but I see that prejudice still reigns supreme here. Any thoughts or comments on blacks or Jews while we are at it? Disgusting! It's time to stop spewing this toxic venom about Illinois people.
P.s. Yes, we moved back to Illinois but we live in the southern part of the state and it is nothing like Chicago. It is totally unfair to make a judgement on a whole state because of a few people from one part of the state. We didn't do that to you when we moved to Wisconsin. Leaving this section of the board and never coming back because I see that a few people on this board have never grown up and put away their predjudice.

Chillax.

I have 15 IL years under my belt. I referenced the term. In jest. I said nothing bad about them. I WAS one for the formidable years of my life. I'm an IL driver and a product of public school system in IL. In fact, ALL I said was that there are hard feelings. I didn't mean I have them. I don't. But you seem to.

Seriously. Jesus.

10. employment situation elsewhere must be brutal
with people acutally moving here to find work.
Damn

Wisconsin is nice and all and I do not mean to disrepect.
Lived in land of cheese for most of my life and all.

but i had always had the fantasy of moving somewhere with no winter.
Like south carolina or florida or arizona or fill in your own blank.....

Wisconsin has always been a place to leave
Old tourism bumper sticker "escape to Wisconsin" being cut up to say
"escape wisconsin"

all i can say is
damn

11. Hey Joe!!
Keep me posted on your plans. I'll get the group together at Mo's (where I got to meet everyone) and give you the tour as I know the place. (One newbie to another.)

Remember, you've got a place to stay.

15. Jobs in Milwaukee?
I searched for six months and found nothing... got turned down for a two-day a week dishwashing job in a Japanese restuarant due to "lack of experience". Eventually had to give up my apartment and move back to Madison...

That was over a year ago, though, and to be honest, other people would probably have a better time searching than I.

Grafton has some big boxes that are opening and they must be hiring from somewhere.
It is retail and i would be hard pressed to reccommend it....

Maybe a somewhat frequently listing of who is looking and for what...
I don't know.
