I will be in Milwaukee for a day. What are some good things to see,
and good places to walk around? I know Summerfest is going on, but are there nice downtown areas?

3. conspicuous by it's absence is the Milwaukee Public Museum
I don't believe this was an oversight on Nikki's part, it's a TERRIBLE museum. They've got nothing to see that you can't see elsewhere and with recent budget cuts it's more awful than it's ever been.

The lakefront is beautiful and there are also lots of interesting neighborhoods with gorgeous architecture if you enjoy that sort of thing.

5. So where are the neighborhoods you are talking about?
I like walking around.

http://www.historicmilwaukee.org/ Personally, I love looking at the houses on Milwaukee's East Side in the area near UW Milwaukee.

Wauwatosa has beautiful neighborhoods of Craftsman style bungalows, a sweet little "downtown" with magnificent pizza and "one of the top 25 bakeries in the US" (Simmas). Also the home of RetroLounge's bookstore http://www.xenithbooksellers.com/.

http://www.pabstmansion.com/admission/index.html The Pabst mansion is rather magnificent and you can tour the inside.

We've also got some Frank Lloyd Wright -- more information here http://www.wrightinwisconsin.org/

There are also tours of the breweries, Miller and Sprecher (with free samples at the end) and I believe Harley Davidson also offers tours (but, alas, no free samples).

ETA: Here's a link with a lot of different options http://www.kango.com/things_to_do/wauwatosa_wi_vacations_694311855.html

6. Art's Concertina Bar
It's under new ownership, but if you life kitsch, it's like you died and went to heaven. Every night is like "Woodstock" for polka fans.

Just up the street is The Holler House, the nation's oldest bowling alley. Two lanes in the downstairs of a neighborhood bar. You have to call ahead to make sure they have pinsetters available (no machines here).

After that, you can go up the street to Leon's. It's the best custard in town and the model for Arnold's Drive Inn on the show "Happy Days."

Museums. Feh.

8. you definitely have to eat custard in milwaukee
it's criminal not to but we'll give you a pass if you're lactose intolerant or diabetic or something. Leon's is good as is Kopps (which has several different locations but is not as quaint as Leon's)
