Questions for Dave Obey
Cong. Dave Obey is speaking in our back yard tomorrow. He is speaking on Kerry's behalf. We expect about 40 people. Hope for good weather as our house would be seriously strained if it has to be indoors. I plan on asking Dave to get to Kerry to tell him to simplify his message as a good many of the electorate only understand sound bites and black and white statements. I would like any suggestions/advice any of you would like put to Dave.

1. Tremendous idea - simplify, simplify and...simplify!
He's started to speak with more passion and his message is good but he's got to cut it much shorter. As Howard Fineman (ugh!) said - (he was right here) "he has to sharpen" his message.

2. That would be my
first choice of advice to Kerry.

Learn to speak in soundbites.......yes or no are perfectly good answers!

3. Guns guns guns
My least favorite topic--but it would be nice if Kerry talked some more about the environment and lead into hunting. Face it--that is huge in this area--and heaven knows--they all think the democrats are going to steal their guns!

4. Obey followup
We had close to 90 people in our backyard for Dave Obey. I grabbed him as he arrived and gave him the Kerry must simplify message. Sorry, I didn't see the advice on the gun problem early enough to post the question to him. My mom and Dave's wife, Joan, attended grade school together and Joan has always acknowledged this. Dave mentioned it during his speech. Joan has a wonderful, warm manner with greeting and talking with everyone. My mom asked Dave if there will be a draft. He said, "There already is one with the way they are making the Reserve and Guard stay beyond their alloted time. There will not be a general draft as they will never get the votes for it."
After the speech many of us went to march for the Democrats in the Labor Day parade. Dave was the grand marshall. The Dems had a large number of marchers. All the Repubs had was a float and several vehicles. One Repub running for a local office had a few marchers but that was all they had.
