Action Wisconsin is going to fight this hateful amendment
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 11:37 PM by undeterred
which would write discrimination into our state constitution. It would ban civil unions and marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

This is a year long effort leading up to the referendum vote in November 2006, and they've hired the manager of Howard Dean's WI campaign to help.

Tonight I went to a training meeting for people willing to be speakers. The headquarters is in Madison, but they are going to keep holding training sessions around the state in order to get a huge team of speakers who will talk to as many groups and individuals as possible.

They need help both financially and in volunteer time.

Please take a look at their website, sign the petition, and get involved however you can. This is an issue for everyone who cares about civil rights, not just LGBT people!

This hateful amendment CAN be defeated if there is enough grassroots effort!

2. I think a good PR strategy would include...
Extended discussion about the unintended consequences of the Amendment. Not only would this bill brazenly discriminate against gays and lesbians, it would also make it impossible to enforce domestic abuse laws in hetero co-habitation situations. I suspect many more Wisconsonites know co-habitating heteros than L & G couples. Demonstrating that this bill is bad for everyone can help to defeat it.

3. Exactly- Michigan and Ohio have shown this
It would give the courts a basis for invalidating rights that pertain to non-married straight couples and people living in domestic partnerships.

Unmarried people can buy some of the 1000 rights that the Federal goverment gives to married people (like setting up power of Attorney) but this amendment will make all of that easier to challenge.

It promotes nothing positive, just pushes the idea of marriage equality for gays and lesbians farther away.
