Wisconsiners, suggestions for cool, nontouristy places
to go for a short holiday. Not crazy about the Dells or Baraboo. Don't have small kids either. Just a middle aged couple looking for a little R&R.

1. If a minnesotan can barge in...
take the ferry to Ludington Mi. or drive through the u.p. to points west of Traverse City ... Glen Arbor, Empire & surrounding villages.
or go north up the Leelenau peninsula....the little finger in the mitt opposite Wisconsin's finger in the mitt.
beautiful, not crowded, nice people, can either camp, find a bed and breakfast or in traverse city, fancier accomodations. but camping on the beach is unforgettable. you've never seen so many stars.
water's probably too cold for swimming now, and it's never exactly what one would call 'warm' but it's great for swimming when at a tolerable temperature.
check it out.
p.s. great skinny-dipping spot north of near Empire, walk north from the point Otter Creek runs into the big lake.

2. How about Door County?
The fall is nice there. There are tourists true, but you can find nice B&Bs or try a spot on the Lake side. There is a nice little hotel called the Wagon Trail at the end of the road on Rowley's Bay (I think) at the mouth of the Mink River estuary. There are walking trails and it's right across the bay from Newport State Park which is nearly a wilderness park with several miles of hiking/biking trails along the lake.

3. Wholeheartedly agree about Door County
I love to go biking and hiking up there. This time of year you won't have to worry about tourists either, but keep in mind, some places may be closed for the season. And don't forget to stop at Wilson's in Ephraim.

4. Bayfield
or somewhere along the Chequamegon (pronounce: Sha-waam-e-gon)Bay like Ashland, Washburn or Bayfield. There are some great restaurants and B&Bs in the area... (anybody know if Port Superiorstill has a good restaurant? Their Sunday brunch Seafood Buffet was the second best thing in the whole world  )

5. Try this B&B.
Very quiet, and it's my family's former homestead:

You can walk, sit by the lake, use a paddleboat, read by the fire, whatever.
