Bill making fetus a separate victim advances

The so-called Laci Peterson bill — identical to the legislation that then-Gov. Bob Wise vetoed last year — advanced to the Senate floor Monday, and is all but certain to pass the Legislature in short order.

Gov. Joe Manchin said last week that, unlike his predecessor, he will sign the bill into law.

On Monday, the bill (SB146) officially called the Unborn Victims of Violence Act advanced without amendment through the Senate Judiciary Committee. It now goes to the full Senate, where 24 of the 34 senators are co-sponsors
