Legislation bans bias in treatment of homosexuals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Legislation to add sexual orientation to categories protected under West Virginia's anti-discrimination law is a simple matter of basic rights and good business practices, Kanawha County lawmakers say.

"I'm focusing my efforts on trying to make West Virginia as competitive as we can in a national global market," Sen. Brooks McCabe, D-Kanawha, said Friday. "We want the best and the brightest to come to West Virginia. We want them to feel included."

Fortune 500 businesses such as Wal-Mart and Northrop Grumman have included sexual orientation in their anti-discrimination policies, McCabe said. Charleston and other cities have taken similar measures.

"The most prosperous companies have done this years ago," he said. "It's not some big step where we're going to uncharted waters; in fact, we're following the pack."
