Anyone know anything about Leslie Byrne?
I keep getting emails about her campaign for Lt. Governor. She's a Dem (which is a good start), but she's kind of vague on issues. She's seem very education and senior citizen oriented, which really aren't two of my strong issues.

Just wondering if anyone had some more info on her positions, or if anyone else is looking for the Dem spot as Lt. Governor.

1. her webpage is totally devoid of anything "meaty"... but
her voting record is 100% pro-choice.
the religious right have derided her as "Pro-abortion, Pro-Homosexual" so she must be doing something correctly.

and in her transportation policy she mentions the need to accomodate pedestrians and cyclists.

2. "Pro-abortion" and "pro-homosexual."
Sounds good to me. She's got my vote. ;)

At Kerry rallies in Gloucester and Middlesex. I like her.

4. She was the US House of Reps member from Fairfax...then
wonder boy Tom "the moderate" Davis unseated her. A truly tragic day since he's been less than helpful to NoVA and the country (thanks for helping get all those Republicans elected Tom!). She's worth a good look.

Leslie Byrne for Lt. Governor

December 28, 2004

Dear Friend,

We're almost there! I want to be your next Lieutenant Governor and bring our progressive values to the highest levels of state government, but I can't do it without you! Your response to this campaign has been tremendous, and because of your hard work and generous support we are within striking distance of reaching our $100,000 goal by midnight on December 31st. We can reach this amazing target but only if we work to spread the word to as many friends and family members are we can the next three days!

If you believe as I do, that Virginia must protect its citizen’s civil liberties while fighting those who use fear tactics and overreaching measures like the Patriot Act, please invest in our campaign. If you believe as I do, that Virginia must take immediate steps to protect our air and water by forcing polluters to clean up their messes, please invest in our campaign. If you believe as I do, that high-quality public education at all levels is an absolute priority for our young people, please invest in our campaign. If you believe as I do, that Virginia must ensure voting integrity by using paper audits for electronic voting, please invest in our campaign. As the true progressive candidate in the race, I need your immediate help now to stand up to those few “dyed-in-the-wool Dixiecrats” in our party who don't believe that our progressive principles represent the mainstream of Virginia. Please log on to www.lesliebyrne.org and make an online contribution today.

Please help us make a statement to those who don't understand that good commonsense government is progressive government! I need your help so that we can improve our badly outdated and underfunded transportation system by investing heavily in more public transit, including rail, and promoting more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly improvements. We also need to make affordable healthcare a right for all Virginia families. I am the only candidate in either party who has offered a plan to allow Virginians to acquire health insurance at lower costs with more choice. Do I sound like your kind of candidate? If I do, then I need you on my team! Please sign up on the Leslie Byrne for Lt. Governor website and make a generous online contribution of $500, $250, $100, $50 or any amount you can afford.

By supporting our efforts, you will be joining other concerned progressives around the Commonwealth in proclaiming that we are indeed here to stay! I want to hear from you and work closely with you over the coming days, weeks, and months. Please know that as your Lt. Governor, I will never waver in the face of special interest pressure. My only “interest” is bettering the lives and economic opportunity for hard working families. Please log on to our website at http://www.lesliebyrne.org/ and help us make history next November! Thank you very much for your support. I pray for Peace for all of us in the New Year.

With kindest regards,

Leslie Byrne

6. She was my congresswoman I think a long time ago
before Davis got the seat. She seems to be pretty solid. Education oriented is fine with me honest as a student of Virginia schools, though this will be my last official year.

8. I worked for her 1992 campaign
where she became the first woman to be elected to Congress in Virginia. She had a very popular following. Also she served as freshmen whip in Congress. This was before Gingrich ruined things for us in Congress.

She is an experienced legislator in the state government. Hails from Falls Church/Fairfax. She started on the school board and worked her way up. Wrote a law requiring trucks to be adequately covered, among other things, as a state legislature, and yes she's very pro-choice.

She's a nice lady. I met her at one of the many chilli cookouts you go to when you volunteer in politics.
