http://www.boucher.house.gov/I live in Chicago now - in part because there were never any goddamn jobs in Southwest VA where I grew up. I never expected him to fix that. But even though he was a DINO in many ways, I always took some pride in my home district being represented by a Dem since 1983. His loss is the end of an era, and it can't be one that bodes well from my home region (I am from Carroll County).
He was one of the very few people in that region who understood how important the Internet is. His district has a higher elderly population than the average and a higher poor population than the average and a lower high-school graduation rate than the average. No shit. But I reallly do think that, DINO as he was, his long-term plan really did involve extending cables out to the mountains. (Even though I am of the age group to have been the prime MTV demographic--I turned 14 in 1983--there was no cable TV in my home town then. THERE STILL ISN'T.)
And for more than 20 years, what he did kept him getting re-elected. It wasn't huge, but it did help make the Blacksburg area a tech corridor, which did provide jobs and did help extending internet service out into rural areas.
What has Morgan Griffith ever done, besides appeal to the past and invoke racism?
